Here were my suggestions from the Asylum thread:

Quote
Tinker I would be happy to speak to the Royal about a meet up there, people are very correct in saying there is a planned market area in the Royal, however last year it was cancelled and in addition to the ballroom there is the day room that we have used several times to rest our weary feet and take tea.

Of course there is afternoon tea suggested for Saturday at E.Botham and Sons - http://www.botham.co.uk/ so we are able to look at other activities...

Trip to the Victorian Science Museum (this must be organised in advance and in small groups as it is a private collection and the gentleman who owns it is not able to host too many people at one time) - http://www.museumofvictorianscience.co.uk/

Trip on the steam bus (great photo opportunity)

Trip to the Abbey (great photo opportunity)

Victorian Ghost Walk (private session could be booked if enough people would like an evening convivial)

I am sure there are other ideas, but I am happy to assist in organising any or all of the activities the group feel are of interest.

I would certainly expect something to happen. Its all a bit up in the air ATM, but bits have been talked about on pages 55-57 of the Asylum thread on here.

There is already a regular steampunk meetup at the goth weekend. I believe the venue now is Bagshaws or Bothams or something? It used to be Sherlocks but that became far too overcrowded as it's only a tiny place.

Last time it was in Bothams and there was enough room for all who came

In fact lets make it official now. If no one has any objections I propose the SP meeting to be in Botham's at 4pm, in time for afternoon tea.

Whilst this may be terrible of me to post something after such a long absence, with not so much as a how-do-you-do, but a steampunk meet sounds fantastic. I only hope my employer will allow me to attend Cheesy

Mimsy there was no 'organiser' last time per se'.  Just a suggestion of a meeting time and place which everyone who wanted to attend turned up for.  I know previous WGW Sadien (Sp?) took the lead on but it just sort of gelled in April

As the proposed time of 4pm on the Saturday at Bothams is the same as last time then Id say go with that as a plan.  Start spreading the word Smiley

I thought Major Tinker was looking into alternative venues for the meet up, like The Shambles and THe Royal?

Am I getting confused? is this a Brass Goggles meet up and his a VSS meet up?

I missed it last october and saw you all in Bothams as I was there anyway and kicked myself for not knowing!

Apologies for indicating so Mimsy, but I believe you are a little confused (although as always I'm happy to proven incorrect).

Not to speak for the Major, but I took his intention as to allow someone else to organise the time / venue for the Whitby Steampunk meet-up(s), and that although he took an active part in that discussion the VSS would not be organising it per se.

If it were possible that we could all meet in the previous venue (Bothams) for afternoon tea on the Saturday that would be grand, but there was also a burgeoning discussion around finding a watering hole to frequent or attractions to visist in the remainder of the daytime / evenings if so wanted, hence Lady M's (quoted) post above  Smiley

I have placed several suggestions for outings whilst we will be in Whitby and have offered to contact the Royal to ask if we could use it as a base, for example...

Friday as people arrive meet at the Royal for tea.  This location would be the fall back position where all those in Whitby could head to during periods where they need to rest, take tiffin and look for like minded people to have a quiet moment with.

In addition to this Bothams is happy to take a booking for up to 50 people for afternoon tea on Saturday, but need to know if this is required.

Sherlocks can also offer a space for a meet and refreshments and as it is open on Sunday, when I believe Bothams is closed, there is an alternative for those unable to make Saturday or in addition to.

I have spoken to one of the ghost walk tour guides and although he cannot make it "steamy" he can make it victorian and at a time to suit a group of 20-30 people.

The steambus is running throughout the weekend, as are the boats and the Abbey is open, all venues for a bit of photo tarting  Wink

The Museum is the trickiest, but probably the most interesting.  The gentleman who runs it is not in the best of health, so if we can come up with a day/time/number in group we can book as a group if people would like.

There is also the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, although they are running a Wizzards and Warlocks weekend for children and families as it is Halloween, so it might be full of coglings!

I love museums so much I now spend half of my life in one though (although we only have spacey stuff, with a little addition of my new Jules Verne exhibition!), so I still think I beat you!  Wink

Bothams is indeed closed on a Sunday, so we'd need an alternative meetup place if people wish to for Sunday. Sherlocks is a fantastic location but just very small...

I'm also not entirely certain Bothams would now be able to accommodate the numbers that would be interested in attending, as in April it was an incredibly tight squeeze and some people ended up having to sit in the main area to rest for tea and tiffin... is there any chance they would be willing to increase the numbers to perhaps 75?

Personally, I think that contacting the Royal, particuarly when there will be trade stands there, would be the best idea, so we have one location for the whole weekend. I'm pretty sure they'd be able to put aside one room for steamy meetups for the entire weekend (Friday to Sunday) as when we went last October there were empty rooms galore, one of which just a small few of us retired to to warm our cockles (or should that be goggles...  Cheesy). That in itself would probably accommodate at least 75 people. This would also mean that we could meet up daytime and nightime. Being a hotel I'm sure they'll have both tea and alcohol facilities for our disposal??

Trinity - if you're willing to approach the Royal, I'd say lets see what they can offer.

As for the Ghost walk and museum - count myself and Sir Ninian in please!

Hello Georgie old girl!

Have left messages for the Duty Manager and Conference Manager at the Royal yesterday, but as they are a Shearings Hotel (coach parties) they said the day room would be out, as that is needed for their residents to use upon arrival and depature.

I am waiting on an idea of numbers for the other activities, although all is on standby.

The lady at Bothams said 50 was the capacity on the big room (where the pesky 9th Paralel sat last year) and that we had the small room for 30 last year.

randomjedi_1138 indeed correct about a place for the VSS. The Major is looking for a location the VSS to call their own throughout the weekend so people know where meet fellow Steampunk’s. This is a great idea as new SP’s feel a little lost. The Saturday meet up is indeed a different venue for tiffin.

Our good friends from the Discombobulous are doing a great job as usual in sorting things out.

for myself and Captain Keen we would be most excited by the prospect of a get-together and had indeed planned a visit to the museum as well as trips on both "Bertha" and the Grosmont Steam Train ( with perhaps tea thrown in?)
I will pop back here to see how the organisation goes but I imagine that the neither Bothams/Sherlock or the other little teashop would be able to contain us all surely? Perhaps a larger venue? The Royal or how about the bar in the Metropole is that large enough?

The problem been we don't know how many SPs are going to attend.  If we go on the numbers that were at the meet in April then Botham's will have no problem accomodating us even if double that number show up as it's probably one of the largest tea shops in Whitby

Sherlocks is a lot smaller and by it's nature the seating is fragmented.  Haveing the meet in a pub is ok but you have no guarantee they will be enough room when we get there as it my be full of patrons  unless we book a room.

Lets see what TrinityTrash's enquiries bring about with the Royal.  Of course we can have more than one meeting place. Although decisions need be made otherwise it becomes an endless round of debate which is why I said lets make Botham's on Saturday at 4pm official. Since we had the meet here last time it seems the logical place to have one again.
