Per the discussion in this thread, a new policy will be put in place:

Beginning Oct 9, 2009, posts made in the Off-topic area only may be purged after 90 days. Stickied topics will be exempt from this policy; if there are particular topics that are worth preserving, talk to a moderator about moving them into an on-topic board or making them sticky.

Update (2009-09-17) { There has been a little confusion and debate that I'd like to clear up. At this time, there is no plan to purge active topics; only entire topics that have been inactive for 90 days will be purged.  The exception is the "last 5 minutes" thread, in which all replies older than 90 days will be purged (there's no continuity concerns there, given the nature of the thread). Please let me know if there are more questions. }

No posts in any area other than Off-topic will be purged.

The software to support this policy will be rolled out in phases, so you may notice older posts still in place. This change is basically to say that if it's in Off-topic, don't expect it to live beyond 90 days.

Again, this does not take effect until Oct 9, 2009; it does not affect any boards or topics outside the Off-topic area.

Please let me know if there are any questions about this policy.
