Hi all,

Well, my last pair of sturdy fishtail trousers died last year and were far beyond repair.  However the prices currently are more than I'd care to be spending on a single pair of trousers.  Is anybody aware of a sewing pattern for them?  I've already had the suggestion just sew an extra bit on the top of regular trousers, they clearly don't get the point.  I have plenty of military pairs, but nothing suitable for civilian, or indeed high summer wear.

Any pattern links gratefully received.

Get a traditional trouser pattern and modify it. By "traditional", I mean, just make sure it has a high enough waist.

The fishtail can be cut with the body fabric or as an addition. The addition basically has the body fabric tapering in at the centre-back seam and tapering out/going straight with the additional piece. But this varies with the body. The best way to do it is to make a linen mock-up, cut that piece off, adjust to fit, and add it back on.

A pattern for classic jeans may actually be shaped this way.

And here's an actual pattern :  http://www.reconstructinghistory.com/products/rh919-1830s-1900-trousers-1

Also, you can just draw your own pattern from scratch :  http://www.costumes.org/HISTORY/100pages/1893to1898cuttersguide.htm (Part 3)

Well these http://www.alleycatscratch.com/lotr/Hobbit/Frodo/Fellowship.htm have other things too but some way down the page are a pair of drop front that look like they have a fishtail back. They are no waistband no belt, and they don't have a full length leg. They are obviously based on the knickerbocker style trousers worn by Frodo in the movies.

Sorry I have noticed it is out of stock. The site is usually good at getting orders out very quickly . Try and contacting them to see when it will be back.

Ah, splendid suggestions all around, I shall look into some of these, I'm getting thoroughly bored of unsightly shirt between trousers and waistcoat when stretching, or leaning over things.
