Im still new to steam-punk, and would like to hit some of the quintessential classics of steam-punk comic-ry. Any suggestions? I have read alter-nation, but otherwise have heard of nothing.

Might be a bit difficult to find nowadays, but Steampunk came out back in 2000. And no, you can't borrow my collection.

There's a few DC Elseworlds stories that qualify. I would suggest Amazonia, which is about Wonder Woman in the Victorian age.
Apart from that, there's the excellent Ruse by Mark Waid. Good for fans of Sherlock Holmes.

Most the big ones seem to be covered. It's not strictly considered steampunk, but the Graphic Novel Hallow Fields deals with mad science and clockwork mechanisms, a lot of which comes out in the decorative motifs.

Several modern detectives now claim that “Jack the Ripper” was actually named Carl. “Carl the Ripper” just doesn’t have the same ring.

Here we have Oscar Wilde as the hero, fighting evil scientists: Sebastian OIt should be available on amazon, but it's a bit costly. I think it's out of print. If your Italian is good, you might have a chance at a copy of lower cost

I've seen several Oscar Wilde mystery books (one was in the Vatican), for download, but I'm not sure if they're comics or not.

This was flagged up by one of my Facebook buddies, apparently he'd caught a podcast about it recently. I'd really never heard of it, but it does look interesting. http://www.clockworkwatch.com/
