The Girders, by Mary Lavin, 1944.

I read this in an amazing hardcover book of short stories, all of them quite old, but very good to read.

For a brief moment after reading this short story, I thought somebody had been documenting my own innermost feelings about the same subject. Apologies that it is in the format of an image, but I could not find a textual version. It should be readable if you open it in another tab and expand it. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

What we get to know, we can learn to love and see the beauty in it.

If you click on it again, it will resolve into readable text.

The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. I've been off work due to ill health for some two years, and I kind of miss some of it now.
