No offense to the fans and creators of such music, but is there anything a little more "fun" out there in terms of Steampunk Music?

I find Vernian Process, Abney Park and Unextraordinary Gentlemen to be a little um... heavy and industrial for my music tastes, focusing more around the automation/industrial feel of Steampunk and less of the High Adventure/Exploration vibe that attracts me to the genre.

Dr Steel is very much tongue in cheek most of the time, and Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer is downright hilarious.

If you're looking for something with more of a cabaret feel, The Dresden Dolls are good.

Not necessarily steampunk, but I find The World Inferno Friendship Society to be quite jolly.

Since I do not believe that we have strictly defined steampunk music yet I would recommend some of my favorite anachronistic folks, The Two Man Gentleman Band. The Decemberists certainly reference historical music and themes in a way that I find appropriate. Buddy Nutt has a very entertaining one-man-band thing going. Jug bands would be great steampunk music, especially since they originated in the riverboat culture, there is a clear historical connection.  Voltaire has definitely been moving in a steampunk/cabaret kind of direction in the last couple of years, although he does retain his original goth sensibility, he has a great sense of humor and is nothing if not fun.

I have had a lot of fun searching out aspects of music that I enjoy, such as "accordions" or "cabaret" to find similar music. There are a number of music threads about on this forum as well that contain long lists of favorites.

I have to agree, Clockwork Cabaret is rather good, but we can't leave them to do it all. Somebody needs to start writing "Good Heavens! Your eyebrows!" songs. Things with titles like "We haven't seen the cat since ..."

It's the "gothiness" of the Steampunk Music Scene that turns me off of it, again no offence to those who like it, I just don't. But I'd never really considered The Decemberists to be Steampunkish, they tend to follow a more Medieval or Renaissance era with their music.

Try Moth!Fight!

www.myspace.com/mothfight

They're pretty lighthearted, and they really have no gothic elements.  Just give their songs like, 15 seconds to start up and you'll find them really bright.

Listen to 'Hopscotch' and 'Jaga Baba (Hopscotch Pt. II)', and you may be pleasantly surprised.

Just go to http://www.gildedagerecords.com

And read the band bios. We have a lot of lighthearted artists.

Oh and perhaps you should listen to more of our music, because it isn't all heavy/industrial/oppressive/goth stuff.

Her Clockwork Heart, The Maiden Flight, and The Maple Leaf Rag are all a lot more lighthearted.

You could always look at the master list of Steampunk Musicians that is stickied up above. Look for anything with "Indie" in the description... none of those bands are Goth at all.

i.e.

Agent Ribbons
Arcade Fire, The
Beat Circus
Beats Antique
Beirut
Darius Greene
DeVotchKa
Extraordinary Contraptions, The
Gogol Bordello
Imaginary Airship
James Gang Experience, The
Nouvelle Vague
Paul Roland
Peryls, The
Real Tuesday Weld, The
Squirrel Nut Zippers
This Way to the Egress
Tragic Tantrum Cabaret
Vagabond Opera
World Inferno Friendship Society

Gilded Age Records is a collective of like minded Indie artists, all unified by a common 19th Century/Steampunk theme.

Weren't Abney Park a 'goth' band before they went Steampunk?

Not so much "fun" as downright creepy and dark as hell, but check out Misophone please! They rock my world!

I'm digging this... though I'd hesitate to call it downright creepy and dark as hell.

It sounds a little more upbeat to me. Weird yes, dark... occassionally. Creepy? Not so much (of course I consider creepy, stuff like Cold Meat Industries)

I find it creepy in the same Tom Waits can sometimes be, if you read the lyrics you realise chipper songs like Motherless Moth Headed Bread Boy are actually quite dark.... Smiley

Yeah, but anyway : creepy doesn't mean bad. Skeleton Key sounds also kinda creepy and i find it fun though. It's just a question of feeling.

If by "fun music", you meant "no serious", this band isn't really serious musically and lyrically (but it's french) :
http://www.myspace.com/tayobo

But then again, it's just a question of feeling. For me, this doesn't seems serious but seriously fun, still it's not the kind of music you'll make your child listen to...

I see. So what you were referring to I would define as subversive. Which can be way creepier than music that is up front and trying to be dark. Check out the 60's pop band "The Poppy Family" or "The Carpenters" for instance. Both had a lot of very bubblegum pop styled songs that were super dark and weird.

You should check out "Creature Feature" they are totally creepy and fun at the same time. All of their music sounds like it came from The Nightmare Before Christmas.
