actually it's a stab at everyone who dresses up in comic con it was: 1. Furry 2. Steampunk 3. Kilt wearing? 4. Elf/vulcan ears 5. Jacket? I think in this case, it's an over-reaction to be offended or even to care; Scott was insulting everyone I agree. We have a lot of catching up to do to reach the level of ridicule that Trekkies and Star Wars fans have gone through.. Dee

Well, I think that's the insulting part. He assumes that the Steampunk get up is just the same as the rest of the stuff, a costume. I know to most of us here that represents something more which he is missing. I recommend you going to a forum for furries or one of those other groups you mentioned and see how far you get with this argument. I don't mean to single you out specifically, but there seems to be a lot of pot->kettle:Black arguments going on in this thread.

It all depends on how one wishes to see the thing really. However for those that see it as a way to run around wearing silly hats I have the following rebuttle.
We have outfits for people of all shapes and sizes, useful for those that *cough* arn't quite up to scratch on that skinnymcthin anime character they want to prance around as.

Stereotypes become stereotypes because there's a tiny seed of recognizable truth in there somewhere. I can certainly recognize myself in the "con-going steampunk geek", and have a good laugh about it as well. If more people could let loose and embrace their own silliness, the world would be a better place.
I also find it ironic that the guy who drew this comic apparently makes his living (or at least spends a good amount of his time) attending comics conventions.

I figured this whole "convention stereotype" thing had been made up from whole cloth... until someone pointed out that "I'd" made an appearance in The Devil's Panties! http://devilspanties.keenspot.com/ My best friend, my wife, even my own dear Mother thought it was a picture of me! I ran into the artist and asked her about, and while we had met previously she assured me it was either a coincidence, her subconscious, or my fault for looking too much like a generic con guy. You be the judge:

In Defense of Scott Kurtz:
If one looks at this in a "non" insulting light (hard to do I know) it can be inferred that the real shot isn't at Cosplayers, Steampunks or any one group but at a specific type of costumer.
The costume in the comic thematically jumbled and largely nonsensical, coming across more as just an excuse to dress up rather than an actual costume constructed for a specific reason and following a specific theme.
But On The Other Hand:
Who cares... wearing a costume at a convention is a good conversation starter and generally you have more fun, no matter WHAT the costume is.
Scott Kurtz strikes me as a bit of a mean spirited fellow when it comes to the geeky masses, he seems to want to pretend he's better than (them, us, whatever) and often takes digs at the various communities out there.

My personal view?
I agree with the whole thing in the post above, how it may just be a poke at guys who can't seem to bloody decide what they are dressed up as.
I'm gonna say that I, personally, don't see him taking a lot of digs at anyone in general. I mean, the comic itself is probably a large dig at the Game Magazine industry, but who cares? It's a comic. If it doesn't make you laugh/think/enjoy it, then don't bloody read it.
Fracking tired of people making comic strips serious business.
Oh gods..I gotta stop..I'm gonna end up a troll this way.

Although I think PVP was trying to be funny, I still think his point of view on the subject is altogether wrong. It should be the other way around. People should wear what it pleases them to wear. Not what's on sale at Wall-Mart. Those in need of help are the people denying themselves the pleasure of being at ease with what they like and how they want to look. I'd rather be a weirdo who knows who he is than a non-weirdo who doesn't have a clue. I dream of walking on the street and seeing people dressed in any sort of way, going from Greek togas to futuristic Ghost-in-the-shell suits. I want humanity to break the bonds of every-one-has-to-look-the-same-to-feel-accepted-by-their-fellow-man...
