The sad truth of the matter is that yes we would dress like that all the time if we could. Some of us do. It is not a cry for help. I say that guy needs an education in what steampunk really is.

Hmmm....a personal issue dig from the PVP writer maybe....or a way of stirring up attention for them like a shock-jock thing.

If I had a small guess, and this is a guess, may be FAR out of the ballpark, but, I think the tail is something to do with "neko" or however you say it- that kind of fox-like-human-demon-thing in popular Japanese anime. I noticed elven ears, too, right?

He says 'cry for help' as if it's a bad thing.

What's wrong about searching out a context that lets you express a part of yourself that would otherwise atrophy?

I could be making too harsh a judgement on this fellow.

He might say the same things about the corporate executive who escapes wearing boots and jeans or t-shirts and leather.

He might find it sad to see  someone from  "the projects"  don  elaborate, glittering and colorful apparel  on the weekend
to  counter the bland and stunted aspects of the rest of their lives.

He could become caustic when a woman feels the need to find an "appropriate" place to affirm her sexuality
or,conversely, become drab to "dress for success" and be taken seriously.

He could be just as dispaging of the youth who try to acquire an identity and confirmation of who they are by assuming a
  commercially mandated culture.

He might  protest the  fad wardrobes that  become obsolete just in time to require new purchases to  insure that  our
iconoclasts are never out of uniform.

He might be a twerp who can't accept a costume that he can't identify.

Or,his contempt might be directed at those of us who hide  within areas where pretense is acceptable because  we  haven't staked out a place to be ourselves.

A person in need can cry out a warning or a plea  to those around him  or he can deny his condition.

Is this critic  demanding that we be silent and invisible - or that we  take ourselves out of self-imposed exile?

Whether we present ourselves as the people we were born as or as other, more exotic personas,no one will figure out
who we're supposed to be if we don't take the trouble to be authentic.

actually it's a stab at everyone who dresses up in comic con it was:

1. Furry
2. Steampunk
3. Kilt wearing?
4. Elf/vulcan ears
5. Jacket?

I think in this case, it's an over-reaction to be offended or even to care; Scott was insulting everyone Smiley

Well, I think that's the insulting part. He assumes that the Steampunk get up is just the same as the rest of the stuff, a costume. I know to most of us here that represents something more which he is missing. It's just that he's making assumptions.

You know what else is particularly sad? If he was lumping all of this together, though it would lessen the blow on it being an all-out criticism for steampunk, it is as you said, with kilt. Making an assumption here, but wouldn't that even be a slight to the Scottish? perhaps that is a minute detail, but it seems oddly out of place- all else being, besides steampunk, some science fiction/fantasy related attribute, and the kilt is WHY? Not only wrong, in my humble opinion, but prejudice, and I am not particularly fond of it.

Ya, its called "humor."
PvP sucks.  I think one made me smirk once, that's about it.  This strip in general, and this cartoon in particular, reminds me strongly of a segment of borish fools for whom I have not a scrap of patience.  I don't have a catchy name for this worthless band of fun sucking losers, but I've seen the type at just about every fringe event I've ever been to.  They will go to the con, but make fun of the "geeky loosers."  They will read a comic and make fun of someone for "over thinking" it.  These are the same assholes who will spend all day oogling women in skimpy costumes and then make disparaging comments about fat chicks when someone crosses their mental weight limit.  Basically they seem to me like folks who really don't fit -- not interesting enough to really be geeks, and not whatever enough to be frat boys.  Can you tell I don't like 'em?  I've seen jerks like that spoil the mood just too many times at too many parties.  If he went home and drew a comic about it, you can bet this asshat was sharing his lovely opinion all over the con.

Or maybe it just wasn't funny, can't really tell.

(To be clear, this isn't me getting defensive about steampunk per say, but me getting prickly about a certain attitude one often finds directed at anything "too geeky.")

EDIT: it is also entirely possible that I take crap like this way too seriously.... I think maybe it just wasn't funny...

Yeah, I suppose I don't like the Steampunk being in there because it's not really a funny strip... the punchline is just bitter and anal. I'm geeky and proud of it. My friends are geeky and they and I are proud of it. My girlfriend is geeky and I love her all the more for it. Why even approach such  things if you're just going to maintain a negative attitude?

I think if such opinions really mattered, conventions of the geeky variety wouldn't exist.  It's easy to get a bit miffed over these barbs, but a swift tug will remove them.

I suggest everyone have a cup of tea.

Actually, in "Real Life" I dress worse.  The Wife and our daughters have performed interventions on my closet to remove some of the aloha shirts which especially offend their sensibilities....

I have never even heard of PvP before, so I thought the comic was a dig at the people that attend cons NOT in costume... the two talking are the losers, aren't they?

I think you do take it a bit seriously.

I AM saying this rather then my usual Anti-PA junk. Only one of their comics made me laugh, and it was on something MUCH more geeky then cosplaying/costuming at a con: Warhammer Online

I dress like that every day (well, in a female way, as I am a chick) and I get endless compliments, people holding doors for me, tourists taking pictures and so on. I would rather look beautifully groomed in my Victorian Steampunk clothes and stand out than wear normal boring things and be one of the teeming millions.
