I have been getting into lolita fashion recently but I don't like the super frilly type stuff. I'm also getting into steampunk fashion (more mad scientist than Victorian) and tend to be a cross between industrial and punk in my general style. I would like to create a post-apocalyptic lolita mad scientist look. Any else into mixing styles? What are some strange subcultrual combinations you have attempted?

in all honesty, i haven't actually attempted to be anything in particular. i just stick with whatever makes me happy.

i have been what you might call a new age traveller for as many years as i care to remember. that in itself could be called a subculture, but there were always elements of steam in my life. i just hadn't heard of steampunk so didn't realise that's what it was. the two cultures can work very well together, because in my world of festivals, fairgrounds and alternative people it is quite commonplace to go out dressed in a tophat and tailcoat. infact that has frequently been my attire, and not just when i was operating the victorian funfair rides. to be able to tinker with large pieces of machinery is also a desirable attribute when keeping old vehicles on the road. the lifestyle also dictates being far more conservative with electricity etc, seeing as we don't always have access to it, so many people with a limited amount of electricity lead a similar life to parts of the victorian times. reading by paraffin lantern, playing games and making music being popular past times, as opposed to watching tv, surfing the internet and playing video games. this is not necessarily through a desire to recreate a victorian life style, but more for practical reasons.

i can see steampunk running happily alongside some other subcultures, but i find it very hard to imagine a steampunk chav!

Personaly I'd like to see a rave/steam fusion -bright neon colours adorning waistcoats and top hats; illicitly listening to timpani and double bass amongst the mighty bulk of machines crowding the warehouse...  Grin

Oh dear.... none the less I suppose they are the modern incarnation of the ragamuffin, so I can sort of imagine some bizarre scary hybrid there...

You can technically mix steampunk with anything, though I am sure that protesters will abound (The old "that's not Goth!" drivel comes to mind.)  Ignoring that, there are already forays into Steamgoth, Steamwestern, Dieselpunk/Military, straight Victoriana, Cabaret, Gypsy, etc.  Everyone brings their own individual flair to the culture, and while some might disagree, I have no interest in a Steampunk dress code.

You can't praise a culture's DIY aesthetic and then go yelling about the results of people doing their own thing.  I understand that you can't put on a gorilla suit and call it steampunk, but slap on a top hat or a pair of goggles on that sucker, and, well, the boundary blurs a bit.

If Chavs are 'modern ragamuffins' and steampunk is Victorian..then  Steampunk Chavs would be....

I'm guessing our blends would mix well, Haywire.  Everything I do ends up being something of a mix of Steam-, Diesel-, and Cyber-  all with a paramilitary bent to things.  My wife teases me that the biggest variable in the mix is brown vs. black leather.  Wink

Even the Victorian street urchin/ragamuffin has very little "charm" when said diminutive scamp is disappearing down a sewer grate with one's wallet!

a valid point, though given the choice of having a conversation with the artful dodger or vicky pollard i know what my preference would be!

I think that might just be the contempt of familiarity.  Something tells me a victorian street urchin would eat a modern chav alive.
