Couldn't have said it better if I tried, so I won't try.

I will say this though:

I have never been one of "them" the mundanes. I have always stuck out, pretty much since my rebirth twenty years ago. In a lot of ways I am still finding myself, in a lot of way I am not. I do know that I am into steampunk, it is a major part of my life. I used to be sorta proto-goth, and still have some heavy leanings in that direction. I tag myself with "gothic steampunk" it is not what I am but closer to who. Yes I do shun the mundanes in this world because, well, they just don't understand. I think that is a large part of it. I live in an area where my wife and I are the only steampunks around. Yes we draw attention, but, meh, who cares, just stay away from me you "normal" person.

I'm more chauvinist than xenophobe. I don't hate the sheeple; I just acknowledge that I am better than they are.  Grin (And besides that, they're tasty with mint sauce.)

How "Steampunk" you are and dress should be based on what YOU are comfortable with, not with what the general populace is comfortable with. I have always said that it takes gears of all sizes to make the machine run and that someone who dresses and "lives" very slightly Steampunk is just as important as someone who is able to make a larger commitment. And for many people here, Steampunk is only one part of a larger equation. I myself sort of lean to just a more "well-dressed" look in regular wear, with getting the Steampunk on heavier when I feel like it. This is what I have available and feel comfortable with at the moment. However, whatever style you adapt or are working towards, the most important thing is that it is what YOU are comfortable with - not what you think others want you to be comfortable with.

One last (from me) cautionary note - a large portion of "the mainstream" may well be a different subculture thinking we're all plebians.  Just because someone is not into your favorite quirk doesn't mean they don't have one of their own.

Oh, thank goodness. Some more voices of my-kind-of-sanity. Lilibat, Mimsy and myself are not alone.
