I usually don't dress steampunky in my daily dress. I'm more dieselpunk in style.

just what does that look like?
A pseudo-1920's to 1940's style. Whether it's casual or dressed up it usually includes my Fedora. My goal is to someday look like I walked off the set of either the Untouchables or Maltese Falcon.

A similar situation here. It's fairly rare for me to dress in a Steampunk style but not uncommon for me to sport a Dieselpunk look. Though I like a lot of the styles of the former I find that the latter tend to suit me better & are often times more practical.

is that what they call it? a cravatt... i thought that was the floofy thing that tied on like a neck tie...

Well, cravat is a kind of vague term that covers pretty much any kinda 'scarf-type' item around the neck, running from the simple cloth around the neck up to 'floofy' things like ascots and ties.

It's interesting to hear the comment that it's probably easier for a woman to dress "up" than a man, as I have always thought the opposite to be true..... a chap in a dashing suit and waistcoat, even with "period" accessories seems slightly more timeless to me than us ladies popping on a bustle, or even a voluminous long skirt.....

I like to be "different" and wear my own style, but I don't like to obviously draw attention......as a backstage theatrical type rather than an Actress, I'm not a natural performer in my everyday life.....so I guess that brings me back to the debate of costume versus clothing, which is quite often in my head given the course I'm doing at Uni......

And it's all about where one draws ones influences from isn't it? There are some gorgeous things on the high street that borrow heavily from Victoriana, and I love the rock / rebel look also......

So I guess I kind of try to combine the two.......

And I'm enjoying reading all the different perspectives here.

I did think that maybe there'd be a market for a Society of Anachronistic Dressers..... then I put the initials together and thought better of it  Roll Eyes

I have no idea what the steampunk lifestyle is.

But I am currently wearing striped trousers, a brass buckled belt, a burgundy waistcoat from the dawn of motoring, my argyle jacket and my favourite cravat, because I and my wife have been out to church this morning.

I am also wearing my treble clef cufflinks today, because I then went directly off to play session bass for a female solo artist, and I have returned home to eat beef casserole cooked by my fair lady washed down with St. Peters Organic Ale, and this evening I have put on a WWI aviator hat because the air is a tad chilly now the winter approaches, and topped it off with aviator goggles because that is what I wear when I edit our little Victorian style movies.
