Hello all,

This thread is particularly aimed at the horologists here (Hi Harold Grin)

Lady Elsie has recently acquired a new toy.  It is obviously of some age but we have no idea what.  It is good silver but unfortunately not hallmarked.  There are what seem to be serial numbers stamped into the back of the case.  The face is enamel or possibly porcelain with some very pretty hand painted flowers and pins thereupon.  The Albertine seems to be contemporary and is in itself a very nice piece but has a little bit of damage.  I don't think the key is the original one.  It keeps excellent time and since my dear was looking for a vintage Ladies' Pocket Watch ideally suited to her needs.  I think it is probably european rather than British.  If anyone has seen similar or has any comments they are warmly welcomed.

It's Key Wind/Key Set so that makes it earlier rather than later (probably but not certainly).  It's likely to be pre-1880, some keyless watches were patented about 1845 but might have been made earlier. Apparently Waltham were still making Key wind watches for the UK market up until around 1918.

Would it be possible to get a photo of the movement?  The plate with the two keyholes on it should open, and inside that is the movement.  It looks like there might be a nail notch on the edge in line with the off centre key hole.

Here we go.  Inside the cover there is a small lion hallmark and a further serial number.  Unfortunately it is not a UK hallmark so still can't date it.  We are not too worried about the age since it is just what Lady Elsie wanted.

Thank you for the assistance.

The pic is not shpwing up, can you check the link?

If you do have a nice clear movement pic, I can probably figure out what it is, as well as give an approximate date. You can tell a lot from the design of a movement, even if its not marked.

Cheers

Hopefully this will work (the message was mangled but the data was there...)

Given that the adjustment is marked Faster/Slower I would guess that it was made for the English speaking market.  But Harold would be much more able than I to guess at age/manufacture.  Smiley

Not a problem...
By the way the information I gave you on dates comes from this thread (Google is your friend)

Well.. based on the style of finger bridges, and that it's key wind and set, I'd hazard a guess at Swiss made, 1850's/1860's..

Nice find...

That is a very cool looking watch. I like how decorative it's chain is too. Smiley
