So My wife and I went to Good Will today and we found two things that made us excited. This great lamp is now bring light to our bedroom. It needs cleaned and i would feel a little safer if it had a new plug. And this compass adds more to my gentleman navigator persona.

Oh man, that compass is awesome! I keep forgetting a small (but potentially great) thrift store just opened up near my house... I need to keep looking there for cool stuff.

Wowee, good stuff! Thrift stores around here are very hit-or-miss. I occasionally find cool stuff, but not as cool as those!

Ladies, Gents, et al,I have seen compasses very similar to that one being offered for sale in antique stores for hundreds of dollars! Great hunting! If you didn't want to use the lamp for a lamp, that shade would make a great corset! Regards, Thistlewaite

That is some serious tassle action right there. If it were brown and green, it would be just like the old willow tree on my grandfather's estate... With a very large lampshade stuck over the top.

Since this was about thrift store finds I thought I would put some of the things I found this weekend. I paid a dollar then got home and found 30 cents in on of the inside pockets = total cost of 70 cents. It screams mad scientist's assistant. And these will work for part of one of my steamwestern outfits. It was a really good weekend at the thrift stores because I also picked up several waistcoats and a few skirts.

My initial interest in this site (and Steampunk for that matter) was the retro future science natural philosophy. But, after only a couple of weeks I find myself trolling round the charity shops, which I take it are the UK equivalent to thrift stores and Good Will. This is something I have rarely done before but my smugness on finding a moleskin jacket in my size (XL) for £4 will ensure this becomes a new, if slightly guilty trait from now on! Not terribly SP, but with some additions it moves me a step closer than does my "normal" wardrobe..

That compass is just further proof that many people have no clue what they've got. I've found things at antique and consignment stores that are going for a tiny fraction of their actual value. Speaking of which, it's been a while since I made my rounds through the antique district downtown...

It's called, not perhaps surprisingly, a box compass, and was usually used on smaller vessels, which were unlikely to have the fixed deck compass of larger boats.
New, they can run upwards of US$ 200.00
