We have been working our little socks off and think we have cracked it.

You wanted a day/weekend event where you sort your own accomodation with lots of things going on.

We are aiming to run a weekend along the model of Whitby but aimed entirely at Steampunks and Neo-Victoriana.

The date 11th-13th September 2009.

The City - Lincoln, Lincolnshire.

The core venue - "The Lawn", a former Victorian Lunatic Asylum in manicured grounds in the heart of Lincoln's historical quarter. When we heard it was a Lunatic Asylum first built in 1820 we knew we had found our home!!!

Other venues - Two major hotels, a range of historic cottages with victorian dining rooms and brass bedsteads, a victorian tea rooms and of course a couple of pubs. All within five minutes walk of each other. Plus there is a wide range of other accomodation available from campsites and caravan sites to college and hostel accomodation, B&Bs etc.

There are cobbled pedestrianised streets and parks to promenade through in the quarter between the cathedral (as seen in Da Vinci Code) the castle and the park and Core venue.

We are looking to stage an entertainment event on the Friday evening (live music and comedy).  If there is demand we have scope to add more than one event in several different bars etc plus more gentile pursuits (Lady Elsie wants to host a cocktail party!)

Saturday the main venue will host exhibitions and competitions, dealers rooms, workshops with authors, contraptors and musicians etc. At the same time we want to allow lots of scope for socialising, showing off your kit and relaxing.  Saturday night will be the First Annual Empire Ball.

Sunday is for promenading, picnics on the lawns, cream teas and sunday lunches because no-one will be nursing a hangover will they?

Projected price for a wristband with access to all venues and entertainments: £30.  Tickets should go on sale in a couple of weeks.  The price will increase as we get closer to the event to encourage early booking.  Some features will be available to book seperately if you don't want to attend the whole thing.

Please do not try and book any accomodation in Lincoln yet.  We have provisionally booked everything but are meeting with the tourism people and the venues next week to hammer out the final costings and negotiate discounted rates on accomodation etc to try and save you money.

We hope this will be the first of many future events and give us something we can call our own. Full memberships are probably going to be limited to around 250 but if the demand is there we are looking at ways to expand the whole thing into a full blown festival.

If you are interested in attending please post here to show the rest of us that this event has got your support.

Then please email me to get put on the mailing list for ticket information, accomodation etc.
Email me if you are interested in booking a traders table/space in the core venue.
Email if you are interested in performing -music, dance, comedy etc.  There are several potential venues for different scales of things.  I need to know what you are offering, what size of an audience you think you are happy with, how long a set, and any charges or if you are looking for exposure or just want to get involved in what we hope will be a truly amazing weekend.
Finally please email and volunteer to be involved in workshops, panels etc and if you want to exhibit your contraptions, devices, artwork etc.
We need volunteers to sort a website etc to promote the event. Please email again.

My direct email is majortinker@aol.com

We really hope this is what you want. We are excited about it, we have a core team already starting work. We want an event for Steampunks, by Steampunks.

How say you?

Your humble servants,

Major Thadeus Tinker (Retd) & Lady Elsie  (et al).

My calendar is currently free so this sounds like an excellent idea.  I've pencilled it in and also let a few other know about this thread.

Thankyou very much for posting so rapidly guys.

Working on features etc we would welcome input and ideas.

Would it work to have the Friday night feature having a range of different acts - possibly like a music hall variety show?

We think it should start quite late to allow people time to travel. Is 8.30 a good start time?  Of course to have a venue for socialising and drinking before that too...

Huzzah! well done that man, perseverance once more pays off, and with enough waring to get the kennelling booked for the Dodos....

Now I have a reason to buy an oversize trunk....

Should anyone need a lift in the general direction of Up I may be able to accommodate 1 (or possibly 2) people, in a very small car, mind you.... if enough want to go a minivan would not be out of the question...

Thank you for the support ladies and gentlemen.

I am delighted to say that this project is already beginning to take on a life of it's own. I have already shared my motivation with some friends in this community - "We are trying to create something which encompasses all of the eccentricity and creativity of this community and I suppose I see this event as just one huge steampunk contraption with all the little cogs whirring in one giant human machine. It's the mad scientist/engineer in me coming out I guess."

I hope to very shortly be announcing our first confirmed live band and I have had lots of mails from people offering to get involved and to just take part.

I would like the event to grow organically. I would prefer people to talk about it and invite their friends to join them rather than to blanket market it thus giving in to commercialism.  How do people feel? If my email inbox is anything to go by it looks as though we are going to have no problem at all in filling the venues and making it a big success.

Don't forget to email majortinker@aol.com so I can add you to the mailling list for further details etc.  Bands, acts etc, contraptors, writers, artists, textilier, dealers - we need you too.  Join us now in creating something very special and have a bloody good time.

We have a tagline now for the event "Welcome to the Asylum!".  We do however need a title for the event, ideally something which sums up what we are doing but is also "public friendly" since we want to keep everyone happy.  I am sure someone can come up with
the perfect title.

Looking forward to welcoming more of you to the Asylum.

Your humble servant.

Weekend before my Birthday!
Will have to save up.

Hmm, in terms of lectures/talks I'd like to see some (Un)natural history covered, maybe something about taxidermy or Cryptozoology?  I could probably dig up contacts for both if needed.

Also for promotion setting up a Facebook event/page would probably get a few interested people in. For example for each joins the group, everyone they  are friends with will see that they have joined the group and it multiplies that way.

I like steamblast_mary's suggestion of 'Convivial'

Also tying it in with Neo-Victoriaana is a good idea, I'm pretty sure there are people who put on magic lantern shows (the National galllery, i think, had a Phantamagoria a couple of years ago) and Edwardian cricket, and Napoleonic era re-enactors.

Great News - that's definitely going in my diary.

I've been to events at the Lawn before - its a great venue; very versatile, and you should see the pillared facade. The top of the hill in Lincoln is nice as well. Cobbled street and little shops. There are some great pubs as well - the Vic is opposite the Lawn and last time I was there the beer was excellent.

Well done Major Tinker!

Please, please, please keeps us updated. I can't wait to hear what people are planning to bring to this event.

This sounds an absolutely fantastic idea.  I'm sure that these dates fit in with our re-enactment calendar fine.  What a wonderful setting to choose.  This should really take off and it would be lovely if this became an annual event.  Will have to find myself a ball gown  Smiley

I will email to confirm interest.

This sounds fantastic- I've applied to go to Lincoln University postgraduate starting September so if I get in I see no reason why I shouldn't be able to attend!

I shall definitely be there! :}
My only question regarding ticket sales is, will there be any way to buy them other than online as, as of now I still haven't set up any way to buy things online, although it can be arranged if strictly necessary.
NB Lift/car share possibly available from West Mids should anyone require it.
That could be quite helpfull- however if others need it more I may well be able to make my own way there...

We are on to it with the sweet shops.  We also thought we might try and secure a "tea tasting" session. I will seek a sponsor for this, I wonder if Twinings might be enticed.

The offer of a lecture on Taxidermy etc is also very much appreciated.  There are a number of smaller rooms in the venue and I hope we can create a full programme making use of them.

I have been informed there is a Kinema in a village near Lincoln. We are making enquiries of the possibility of tickets for the Sunday afternoon there for interested people - silent movies accompanied by a piano and an organ that rises from the floor!

Of course it won't all be gentile pursuits since there will be some much noisier entertainments too and I suspect a beverage or two other than tea may be consumed.

We want this to be an event with something for everyone, indeed since we aim to take over a portion of a city I am sure we can offer a wide variety of features.  The commonality we will require however is that people are well mannered towrads one another and have dressed to impress.

This is not intended to be just Victoriana - we want it to be uniquely steampunk so let us know what you are looking for. Whether you are sky pirate, evil scientist or gentleman tinkerer you can be assured of feeling at home in The Asylum.

A note on tickets - of course they will be available the old fashioned way and not just online.

Right-o I have a rootle round this week and see if I can unearth some likely candidates.

Edit: I mean candidates linked to Taxidermy, Cryptozoology etc.

One of the reasons we chose LIncoln is it has many of these old fashioned features already.  There is a sweetshop called Goodies

And a team importer/merchant amongst others.

We have yet to approach them but want to have our meet with the powers that be next week.  Since we will be generating business for the city we feel it fair to get them to help us.

Of course if a trader in traditional sweeties wants a dealers space that is no problem at all.
