Ladies, Gents, et al,

That last is reminiscent of the American "Redneck's Last Words"- " I ain't drunk, ya'll watch this!"

The MacNaughten Clan Motto: " I Hoip In God."

Personal Favorite:Moneta Loquatia, Taurian Faeces Pedester. My Latin is pretty rusty, also...if one of my more learned colleagues cares to correct it, I would be grateful, but I think the gist of it is clear.

This thread motivated me to actually look my family motto up.
Gradatim vincimus     "We conquer by degrees"

personal motto. When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. That's why you pack a proper toolbox.

A motto that several of my D&D characters lived by:
There is no problem that can't be solved with the proper application of a sledge hammer.

Annnnnd the mantra that gets me through daily life and take ownership of it:
Regardless of who's fault it is, I am responsible.

Not a motto, but a very apt prayer I think over often:
Lord, give me health and strength, I'll steal the rest.

Warrior's Code, that one.
Reminds me of a short poem;

It's not my job to run the train,
The whistle I don't blow.
I do not choose direction,
Nor say how far she'll go.
I do not blow the whistle,
Or even ring the bell-
But let the damn train jump the track,
And see who catches hell!

Despite my own leanings in another direction, theologically speaking, I did rather like Alan Shepard's personal prayer said before the launch of Freedom 7...

Mine is 'the world is yours. Do what you will'. translation into latin would be appreciated.

My basic life motto is 'drink like an irishman, fight like a german, and talk like an englishman.' I'm quite partial to that one.

« Reply #68 on: February 19, 2011, 05:02:33 pm »

all of these motto's I like
S'ils te mordent,mords les-If they bite thee,bite them
Prend moi tel que je suis-Take me as I am
Cor nobyle,cor immobyle-A heart noble,a mind determined
Fais qui doit, arrive qui pourra-Do your duty, happen what may

Absque sudore et labore nullum opus perfectumest-Without sweat and toil no work is made perfect
Adverus solem ne loquitor-Don't speak against the sun(don't waste your time arguing the obvious)
Ex hoc momento pendet aeternitas-Eternity is hinged upon this moment

Chi be vive, ben muore-A good life makes an easy death
Morta la bestia, morto il veneno-When the beast is dead, the venom is dead

But my favorite by far is this one
Dai nemici mi guardo io,dagli amici mi guardi Iddio!-I(will) protect myself from my enemies;may God protect me from my friends!

Ah, Miles - I was aboard after her conversion - would have been 1989.  We referred to her as a "Slow Attack".  The two Dry Deck Shelters were on board, of course, and I had something to do with all that stuff.

Fun times - I went down a wire in a horse-collar from a helo when we caught up to her in the East Med.  Made me feel important - I got aboard before the XO caught up to her, they had left port in Sardinia on two hours notice.  What fun!

Cheers!

A motto that I have also used and has been particularly apt, considering my alchemical/pyrotechnic activities:

The man who has no fear is not fit for battle, for the lack of fear comes with a lack of sanity.  The man who as fear and lets it conquer his soul is a coward, and cowards have no place on the field of battle.  The man who accepts his fears and rises above them is a man I want by my side, for only the greatest warriors can conquer a foe as old and powerful as fear.

Just something I made up; not really a motto, but definitely a truth I hold close to heart.
