Resurrecting this thread to avoid the creation of a new one.

I'm putting together a picnic around the Australia Day holiday (likely Sunday the 24th of January). My place of choice is Nara Park/Lennox Gardens behind Albert Hall, or Glebe Park in Civic. The pavilions there are great for a Neo-Victorian get-together. I'm inviting my Victorian costuming/dancing buddies, so there will likely be a good starting crowd, but a steampunk injection is what it needs. I hope there are some takers out there.

Any interest? I'll be going ahead with it with my dancing folk as well, so even if there's not a lot of interest, keep your ear out here. I'll post more details when I find out if I can book the pavilion for our use.

Good lord, is that the time already? *brushes dust from frock coat* What year is this?

A pic-a-nic, eh ... could muster up some old steamers for another fling ... let's hear some details.

I shall squirrel myself out of the woodwork as well.

Though ... Glebe Park ? The crush of the crowds may be a little much. Nara would be nicer, and there are G&T possibilities at the Hyatt afterwards...

Then Nara Park it is.

In the case of inclement weather, I would propose a formal invasion of one of the Canberra Centre food courts (with tablecloths, good tablewear, etc.

The date shall be the 24th of January, from about 11am until whenever people decide to disappear. I'll send off a booking of the pavilion/gazebo thing to TaMS, and hope that we can have an "exclusive" booking.

Reminder - Nara Park aka Lennox Gardens this Sunday. Bring picnic gear, picnic blanket, cold meats and/or salads, cool drinks, a hat, and Victorian or steampunk costuming!

It's not just Brass Goggles people coming - a bunch of my dancing buddies are coming in Victorian garb (and some who don't have costuming).

Ah. I see I neglected to mention that part. Silly me.

From about 11am until whenever people decide to move on to other things.

Will there be future meetups in Canberra? It might be nice to have another picnic before the winter. Also, there's a cosy room behind the main bar in King O'Malleys.

That there is. I think a meet-up around Easter sometime would be good. By that time, I should have submitted my thesis.

Sounds good. What about a night out at Earthly Delights as a meetup?

Well, we have balls every month. Next month is March 20, with the theme Royalists and Revolutionaries. The dances will likely be mostly easy baroque (mid to late 18th century), but you don't have to know any of them beforehand. It's an option, certainly. Steampunk drinking is a good option by my thinking as well. I could likely rope in some ring-ins.

OK. Smiley I haven't been to ED since last year, so it's time to come back again, get the steps wrong, stand on my dance partner's feet, and have a great time despite looking silly. Tongue

Ah! You are in the advanced class.

Despite shamefully and hideously missing the Nara Gardens picnic, I'm still keen to picnic with the fellow steamy gents and ladies.

O'Malleys in Civic has a back room ? <Drags mind out of gutter.>

Generally, I'm keen, but need advanced notice as I 'book up' quickly....

I LOLed.

The room behind the bar has 19th century-style library decor, lots of books, and a grammophone. The skeptics in the pub use that space, and seats about twenty. It may need to be booked in advance.

So is it just me, or is ED the centre of Canberra steampunk? I like that. Please do come back. Looking silly is all part of the game. Either way, I definitely think a trip to the King-Os back room is called for. *drags own mind back from gutter* Ahem, for a gentlemanly meeting (with or without ladies present).

Since no one is making a particular move, I'm going to make an executive decision and suggest a Saturday afternoon - the 6th of March, perhaps from about 3pm? Dressed nicely or otherwise. I suspect we won't have as many as 20, and can manage with a table if necessary. If we go ahead, I'll tee it up with my non-BG friends who are still steampunk-inclined (and the same for you others and any Canberra-based lurkers).

A starry eyed lady ?  Wink

I'll have to see what plans we have for the long weekend - it usually involves getting out of town for a drive in the country or similar. Though my other half may be on call at the hospital in which case we're stuck in town.

If so, back room it is!

And that, madam(oisell)e, is no problem.

I'd forgotten that it was a long weekend! I rarely actually take public holidays off, so they blur into one another.

ProfB, I swear we have half our acquaintances in common - I know a bunch of hospital staff around Canberra.

Sure thing. Or we could do Sunday afternoon, which has a lower concentration of drunk morons.

A good point you make there. I like that thought, and it'll make a nice break from work. Though, being carless, I'll have to pop off at 7-ish.

I like Sun 7 March at 3 then. Come one, come all.
