Calling all steampunks in Canberra or who visit Canberra!
Make yourselves known and we shall arrange a meet-up. We can't let those Melbourne types have all the fun!
For info, I'm in Belconnen when not at work.
Perhaps we can stroll through the botanic gardens when the weather is a little cooler so that our gin does not overheat. Or a dinner (though the steamier venues that I can think of are a tad pricey). We could converge on the nest showing of Miss Kitka's House of Burlesque. A trip up to Goulburn's Roundhouse to look at the renovation of all the old trains. An explorer's caving trip to one of the local holes. Rummaging through antique stores from Braidwood to Cannowindra!
Ideas! People! Clothing! Gin and absinthe! Things that go fizz!

Hey there - the husband and I would love to meet up. We are based in Pearce but both work in Civic and are portable so can go anywhere. We will need to crossover to Facebook to co-ordinate whatever we come up with as a few peeps I know aren't on BG but are very active there. Not sure when MK's next show is on, my husband and various close associates are aligned with the local Burlesque crowd...probably not until later in the year. Other events of note coming up are The Fringe festival with A Stacked Deck Burlesque festival anf Corinbank where we will be involved in the 1920's themed Carnival. AND There will be a fabulous event happening in May (details/date TBA) that will be probably running at The Brassey (!) that will be right up our alley. I also plan to look at running a dinner event on a Steam Train with the local Steam train society but this won't be until much later in the year. So perhaps we should begin with a nice sedate meeting one evening for a reasonably priced drink at The Pheonix. Or if we are wanting to go for cocktails/wines my vote would then be for The Parlour or Muddle Bar. BTW Prof, are you acquainted with Stefan Freestate?

I am also fairly portable, but I don't have a facebook account (in fact, BG is currently the only forum I'm part of). Basically I'm in physics/IT, so when I get home the computer is about the last thing I want to see... Otherwise, a sedate beginning sounds like a great idea, particularly in this weather! Drinkies are fine with me, though I tend more to the Wig and Pen for beers and Benchmark for wines when in town and am compeltely clueless when it comes to club-type things. However, if there are any steamy/deco type clubs, i'm more than happy to investigate! I should be more in touch with the local burlesque scene, since I both enjoy it, and two of my friends tend to be in it, though Cath has other singing commitments in 2009. I shall happily go along with any burlesque events that come up, as well as the train dinner. Apparently Master Stefan and I have been orbiting each other for some years now without ever actually meeting. It's like one of those old slapstick movies - he goes out one door a second before I come in via another door. Several friends who do know us both claim that we should get on famously... I shall try to convince my beloved to come along, but he's both busy (Canberra Hospital) plus he's very introverted and shy, so getting him out and about if relatively difficult!

The Phoenix is notoriously friendly and I could be convinced very easily of the merits of a glass or two in that fine establishment.
Name a day, sir, and after the usual tut-tutting I'm sure we can fix an appointment.

If it's a Sunday evening, it will have to be the 18th. What time, and are we dressing up (for the Pheonix ? )

My great pleasure as always, Madam GG. Truth be told I cannot abide the Wig and Pen, for its staff have proven their antagonism toward we of the Rat Patrol on too many occasions. The Phoenix offers a delightful climate of moral ambiguity. Perhaps we could arrange an earlier date than the 18th. My son returns next Friday and true debauchery becomes so much more difficult to achieve after that. Is this Sunday really out of the question?

Sold to the lady in the, er, .... No matter what clothing I'm wearing below the chin, I shall wear my new derby on top of the noggin. (Though now I have visions of Kenny Everett's Angry of Mayfair going through my head.. )

Lovely to meet you Professor. Pity you had to rush off but perhaps we'll have another opportunity soon to have more of a chat. We crawled out of the Pheonix at about 8pm and went hunting some sustenance from a Far East Catering co.

A fine evening, and fond welcome to the newcomers. Prof - once again we pass like airships in the night - c'est la guerre.
I take it we'll be making this a regular gathering?

Sounds like a plan. Once a month, once a fortnight or once a week ?

Hmmm....yes would like to make it regular but probably once a month is about all I can manage...How about we just pick another day in Feb and set it up? Maybe we can try and catch up with Johnny Payphone while he is in town?
For pub meetups my vote is to stick with late Sunday arvo's as they seem to be not too bad for avoiding other events.
Jan/Feb/Mar is pretty booked out for me already for any space for other events unfortunately.
Was thinking about a mid-winter event (as NOTHING is happening in The Can at that time) probably along the lines of the dinner on a Steam Train...

Startlingly, any Sunday in feb is free for me at the moment, so I'll go with whatever date suits everyone else.

Top hole. Let's try for the second Sunday of every month, whether it's the Phoenix, a restaurant or some other suitable venue.
If other events or workshops flow from it then well and good.

Here is FB event link Next one is February 8th @ 5pm at The Pheonix. Now happening EVERY 2nd Sunday afternoon - A casual meet n greet for Canberran Steampunks/those interested in anything of a Steampunk persuasion. No official function other then having a quiet beverage of choice while meeting other peeps of similar interests and passing on news of other events that may be of interest.

Many apologies for my non-attendance on the eigth, but I was a brain dead zombie cowering in my air conditioning - or the air conditioning's attempt to keep me cool anyways. I shall see you all on the 8th March if not before.

A pity you missed the 8th, Prof - it was lovely and included a meal under the epic-scale (but faux) mosaic at Tongue & Groove.
What say this Sunday we find a venue that's a little more pipe-friendly, just for a change? Vivaldi's, if they're open, or someplace similar?
