Might i suggest this....

1959 The Mouse That Roared

http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi2118518553/player/

Its a very weird l;ittle film about a small country that declares war on America .... Its actually brilliant....and well worth a hunt... it's got loads of steam punk elements (I personally love the race to the moon and naturally the pleasant cup of tea that they have to celebrate...)

there's 20 pages of threads on this subject (which is gre)at, but I haven't the time toda to check them all so apologies if this is old news...

Aaah, yes.  The Duchy of Grand Fenwick, with Peter Sellers playing Tully Bascombe & the Duchess, as well as other parts.  Splendid movie, I saw it when it first was released- I was 12.  The Mouse that Roared was extremely funny to me at that age, & I still enjoy it when I can see it.

I'd also like to make a case for O borther Where Art though... Ladies and gentlemen a stunning retelling of Homer's Odyssey, set in the southern states during the dpresssion... Steam trains, adventure and a kick ass bluegrass soundtrack... plus tell me the devil ain't wearing goggles!

(we may not like the fact that Micheal Criichton is the world's Best selling  sci-fi writer, but can we we deny it?)

Plus why is hardware not in the llist?... (admittedly it's more deisel punk or even cyber punk, but it still deserves a place if only for the outfts...)

Oops I just realised how authoritarian this all sounds  Kiss

You sort of answer your own question, there. Smiley

Although, this became the "not really steampunk, but" movie thread a looooong time ago.

I apologize for the shameless self promotion.
But for those interested in steampunk in film (this seemed the appropriate place)
Check out our Steampunk Action Adventure film a few threads down.
http://brassgoggles.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,32269.0.html

or just straight to the site
www.aurorathefilm.com

Its completely free and the members of the Steampunk community have been a wonderful source of enthusiasm and support for the film.
Hope you enjoy it.

There's a sequel call Mouse On the Moon in which the Duchy Of Grand Fenwick beat the Russians and Americans to the moon. Peter Sellers is not in this though. The wonderful Margaret Rutherford takes over as the Grand Duchess Gloriana and Ron Moody  replaces Sellers as the Prime Minister. Bernard Cribbins is the male lead but playing a different character from Sellers' in the original.
It also has the added bonus of featuring Terry-Thomas..which is a bonus in any film as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say that possibly the Wolfman (2010) but definitely the First Men in the Moon (1964). Even the Harry Potter movies have significant steampunky elements.

Brilliant steampunk from China - a mystery thriller with a very steampunk feel, even though it is set in some very long ago, obscure time in ancient China. A beautiful film, great story and exciting adventure.

Thelomeris looks intriguing. Well so does Detective Dee actually but I must confess I couldn't see a lot that I felt was Steampunk in that trailer. Just the usual ott fantasy Asian fare really.

Detective Dee was an amazing film, and it had some anachronistic tech, but the setting is around 300 AD if I recall, so it isn't really Steampunk just advanced mechanics.

I highly recommend DD, it was one of the best Fantasy films I've seen in years. It was like Sherlock Holmes meets Wuxia Fantasy (i.e Storm Riders, Forbidden Kingdom, etc).

Not steam punk, but a period piece that many of you might be interested in.

Ted Turners 1993 production
Heart of Darkness

with John Malkovich playing the role of Kurtz.  For the 3 or 4 people that don't know, Conrad's book, Heart of Darkness was the inspiration behind Apocolypse Now.

I did mention the film Hardware several posts back as not Steampunk but probably a film that many Steampunks would enjoy.

More of a Post-apocalyptic cyberpunk flick. I am a big fan of Simon Boswell who did most of the music for the film.

JUDGE DEE IS NOT STEAMPUNK. Still, he's awesome. Disregard that movie though, the books are superior. Always remember: If Judge Dee's beard is less magnificent than Guan Yu's facial foliage, someone's doing it wrong.
