Going to see Suckerpunch.

Yes, I know it's crass commercialization.  Yes, I know it's going to lead to no end of asshattery at conventions.

I don't care.

It has a gigantic samurai with a minigun (WTF?), enormous biplane bombers, zeppelins (The lead shoots one down.  Let me say that again:  She SHOOTS DOWN A ZEPPELIN.), a dragon for no apparent reason, and no end of WWI-ish scenery/behavior.

And, you know, that's all I really want in a movie.

I agree, it might have to be a guilty pleasure of mine to watch all that, purely for the aesthetics!

The trailer demonstrates that the acting skills are right up there with Hawk the Slayer, but again, that's not why I'm going.

Have you seen the Sucker Punch inspired animated short?

A better film than the trailer leads me to expect of the feature, in so many ways.

Would you perhaps explain why you include movies like Shadow of the Vampire and Das Boot?

'Shadow Of The Vampire' is set in 1921 so definitely 'post-Victorian'. But it does have lots of lovely wood and brass in it? Grin

'Da Boot' has.....erm,.....nope. Stumped. Jolly good film though.

Well, Das Boot does have a submarine, I suppose... Wink

There are "steampunk" films (Steamboy or Wild Wild West), "steampunk freindly" (the Harry Potter films) films and "steampunk-touched" (the recent Robert Downey Jr. Sherlock Holmes) films...  interchanging them is a common and very understandable misstep.

I think that even before I found out about steampunk. I'd watched or bought nearly all of the films listed, however some do seem to have a loose connection.

Planning on watching sucker punch, cann't help it I saw the large samurai with the gatling gun and that was it for me. Fan of both steampunk and medieval japanese history.

Q: I thought the gun was a gatling rather than a mini just wondering if I was mistaken on this

Game of Thrones is based on the Book Series A Song of Fire and Ice by George R.R. Martin

It is very much NOT Steampunk. It is high Fantasy at its best.

Regardless it is not Steampunk. I watched the first Episode Sunday night on HBO and it is a great series, but it is still High Fantasy.

Has Metropolis been mentioned yet?

It's an absolutely brilliant German Expressionist film made in 1927. It's one of my favorite movies, it's astounding.

And speaking of German Expressionism, could The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari count?

Despite the fantasy veneer (and thus the automated response of the Tolkien name-drop) it has much more in common, thematically, with Frank Herbert's Dune books.

Hmmm, I checked the list and didn't see The Great Race. We might need to add it unless I'm just blind this morning.

How about the 1936 version of HG Wells Things to Come? It certainly qualifies as a victorian view of the future.

 King Kong (either version) maybe?

I am going to toss in ATROPHY. We are describing it as Mad Max, meets Wizard of OZ, encased in Steampunk.  Check out the webisodes that show a lot of the props that I helped make on our YouTube Channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/AtrophyTheMovie

Forgive me if this has been mentioned earlier: May have been a made-for-TV on the SciFi channel but I remembered the name being "Mutant Chronicles". Not the best of movies as far as plot but did incorporate steam driven air ships and rather large gearing for the 'evil' machine buried below.
