The hatch? It's round the back.
Personally, I prefare the "Traveller" or "Countryman" version.
Paving slabs?
What's wrong with cobbles?

Looking good How does one get in and out of it? I don't see a hatch ... Actually, the hatch is just there on the right, at the top of the retractable boarding ladder. Then there's also the cargo hatch which is hanging open on the left, behind the top of the gantry... EDIT: I say, Herr Döktor – I've just noticed that you've never posted a finished image of the life-support bay. You know, just for the sake of completeness...

What could be better than "Haslingden Flags" as used in Trafalgar Square RE the motive power for the gantry - may I suggest using a "Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway" 0-4-0ST "Pug" as a guide, if not a prototype used extensivly at Liverpool and Manchester docks, oftern perminantly coupled to cranes and similar devices?

Funny you should mention that: And looking at the time of your post, I would have been in the modelshop purchasing it at about the same time... Oh, and since Herr Faust asked so nicely:

Well, I'm glad we sorted out the semantics of Germanic root languages. In the meanwhile, careful there, Dr. Quack: I wouldn't want the other forum members to 'stone' you over something I'd 'cobbled' together. A-hem. The current state of play: That's how the shunter works!

Quite right too. I knew you wouldn't "jib" at the idea. And while we're about it, I hope you going to put some form scale chippings under the track. The "ballasted" thing looks a bit bare without it. O.K. Your turn. Dr. Q.

Once this thread is back on the rails again I do have one small suggestion...
Dok, could you put a face on the front of the loco (and fit goggles to it), then we can have Thomas the punk engine.
But seriously - this is an exquisite diorama and worthy of exhibition at the next local model railway convention, just to show people how to take toy trains and think outside the box.
You now have me thinking about a whole steampunk themed model railway layout, with industrial workshops, mad scientist laboratories in castles, gothic houses, launch pads, etc... all in HO scale and serviced by a narrow gauge railway.
