Thought I'd pop a picture of where the project is at the minute:

Oh, and much to my surprise, I found ANOTHER one of those strange flower vase... things... that the engines were made from, here's a picture of it in it's original form:

as utilised here:

Must get round to some Martian scenery...

Truly, good Döktor, you are a crafter of magnificent proportions. This quite ingenious craft warmed me to the very cockles of my clockwork. Thank you for such an inspirational piece of art. Truly, you should make a few of these to sell to interested parties (namely, myself!)

Looking forward to more of you Work,

That is coming together remarkably well.

The vase is a little odd, though...

I bought the first vase just because it was a number of interestingly shaped plastic 'things', and had got some way into the basic structure of the Sphere before the gas lamp went on over my head!

But yes, it is rather peculiar...

Well, it's been a while, and I've decided how to display the Sphere: I'm making a launch gantry scene:

As you can see, there's a platform with a wire mesh floor and vents for the exhausts, and a loading/maintenance gantry- this will be mounted on a set of railway wheels, and run around a ring of track.

More soon!

Ah, phlogiston reaction chambers! A good way to avoid messing around with that pesky goo, cavorite. That cannon wasn't too sane by itself too. Just remember to keep your phlogistonite tanks firmly sealed, or you'll end up stranded on Mars like Dr. Freud, Calamity Jane and a few others, back when Percival Lowell's Great Cannon malfunctioned.

Always thought you had a bit of a look of "The Fat Controller" about you.

Aside from the not being fat part, that is.

I've got one of those old Hornby "Ducking Giraffe" sets if it's any good to you.

Martian Dreams, Shoggy? Alas, probably better than Martian reality!

Dr. Q.

Hmm, well, those bits that stick up from behind giraffe's ears look a bit like Martian antennae...

...But what would cause a Martian giraffe to duck?

PS: Vis. the Fat Controller resemblance- it's the top hat, isn't it?

Beautiful!  Your attention to detail is amazing, like the heat oxidation on the rocket nozzles.  If you ever get around to building the real thing, I would be more than happy to buy one... no, seriously, make one and I'll buy it. Tongue

Watching your progression through the photos of the different stages of assembly is remarkable and truly inspiring. However, I would also be very interested to see some of the fabricating being done on the parts themselves. You obviously are a highly skilled model maker and I think we could all benefit from watching some of your skills "in action", as it were. I, for one, would be eager to pour over as many photos and as much description of the creation process as you could bear to supply. Maybe, if we say please, could you give us aspiring artists a more detailed glimpse at how you achieve those wonderful details, on some of your future projects?

Herr Döktor, me being, I shall attempt some criticism. Which, if I may add, is hard because of your skills.

Firstly, is the right-most 'foot' of the Sphere slightly skewed?
Secondly, shall I assume the loading crane will have some extra supports added? Otherwise, such a 'pillar' is mighty unbalanced, riding around on such little surface Wink

Otherwise, obviously great work Smiley

Thank you for the kind and encouraging words, one and all!

Worry not, Mr. Faust, the feet are hinged for landing on uneven terrain, and the one you pointed out is merely not sitting parallel to the ground; as for the gantry/crane, I will be adding counter weights and a small locomotive to move it on the track, so it'll be well counter balanced.

Hinged for landing...Good Gods, I had not imagined it was that detailed and functional! And, well, I shall mention that no more, then Wink

The gantry/crane, however...Could you indulge me and Paint what you have in mind? I am starting to wonder now Cheesy

Thank you, Mr. Haint!

I'm going to make a little shunter style engine like this:

But more caricatured, foreshortened into a little bulldog of an engine- with the base of the gantry very securely bolted to it, so a minion could move the gantry for loading and maintenance.

I'll hopefully get some workshop time this weekend, so I'll be updating soon!

I'm working on the flagstoned floor:

Each stone cut from .5mm styrene, corners rounded with sandpaper, and glued down to the acrylic disc base.

The gun is for if it all gets too much for me.
