(...)The current state of play: That's how the shunter works! I was 'afraid' you would go that route, herr Döktor...Perhaps the engine's weight far exceeds the loads the crane will be carrying, but otherwise, it would appear to me that if the load is at the top, the load could use the crane itself as a 'lever' to make the engine topple...

Seems fairly similar to the current shunter - only doubled. Perhaps an identical shunter could be purchased, and the two joined together somehow?

Good point.. maybe a second track could be added around the first, with a second shunter which, when coupled to the shunter on the other track, would provide a wider and more stable base? it would also be an excuse to go and get more model trains and tracks, which is always a good thing..

Harold, that engine is fantastic beyond words, even these ones.
Rowan - we can do better, how about this one (which is up the hill from us and still operating?)... Herr Dok, how about a water tender fore and a coal tender aft (or two small flatbeds) with pivoting flying buttress gantry extensions to support the main gantry. That way when you hit the brakes it won't all go 'A over T'.

And to think, had Harold not brought this up, I may have never heard of this beauty.. Where is it, and how can I see it shonting and shunting?

Herr Döktor,
I saw this right before I left for business this weekend so I was unable to post. Once again a masterful creation. I just love your style and I am also very in awe of how you use your materials. Something created and something found is such a great way to build an object.
Again Herr Döktor a wonderful creation!

Spent a little time in the workshop, I've adressed the tipping question on the crane, added some detail to the platform, and given some base colour, in red oxide: Close-up of the crane: And the engine: I also tried out the crane with a scale weight of 1¼ tonnes, so it should work in practice...

That's fantastic! The red is a great base color for this project. You're making it extremely difficult to find anything to nitpick about.. *looks closer* Nope.. I've got nothing. Though secretly I'm still hoping for a fitting rendition of the crawler transporter..

Track bed ballast, spot on.
Wheeled outriggers, neat and very fitting.
Red oxide paint scheme, excellent.
I assume there will be some knocking back and weathering to go on.
Painted chain as part of a mechanism? Errr?..... Well?.... Errr?
Don't get too upset. It's totally fabulous, but if it was all glowing praise, then the space helmet would no longer fit by the time you got finished on this one.
Shockingly bad bit of wordplay?.............
Sorry, punable to think of one.

Oh yes, well done, I was wondering which one of you would be the first to point out that obvious, and quite deliberate mistake... *sigh* I'll paint the chain a dirty gunmetal, and it all gets a good dirtying down before its done..! As for the wordplay: well, it wouldn't be the same if we didn't get up to semantics...

Looking beyond great, I might need to reserve a ticket with Mr. Beeman Though my own gripe is that the track looks very separate from the base, I do hope you will be doing something to blend it in.

Once again doc, beautiful scale modelling work there sir.
My turn to pick at a nit (scratch scratch) but wouldn't the outrigger wheels on the gantry have worn a rut in the flagstones?
c'mon people - we gotta find something to suggest - otherwise the sheer brilliance of this work is just that...
...sheer brilliance and truly inspiring!

Absolutely smashing work, however to my railroader's eye...
Only issues I can find are with the ballast and track bumper.... (ballasting is an art, I can provide photos of a good ballasting if needed) Basically, the ballast should be finer, and it should extend and be bevelled outwards from the ends of the sleepers, and not quite covering the sleepers in the trackbed. As it is, your ballasting would be very prone to drainage and washout problems, for flagstones or a stone surface, sunken light rail or trolley trackage would be better. There is such a thing as ballast-less track, but it uses a pre-cast concrete roadbed. (its alos known as floating track). The bumper on the track end should have its trackside legs to the inside of the rails, and the outer end legs should be anchored into the ground solidly..
Cheers Harold

Not if they have just been newly relaid .Don't worry Herr Döktor I'll tell those nitpickers.(we have word for that in Dutch, which I won't say here but it involves ants and lovemaking ) .

Alas, my skills with 3d programmes are non-existant, but if someone who was proficient would like to render this device as, er, a render, I'd happily give them permission, HAC... As to the nitpickers: all criticism is gratefully recieved, now wait and see what I take on board and what I discard..!

The crane is very attractive, especially painted red. It makes me think of the space shuttle gantry. However, might I suggest something more like a scissor lift? Not for superior functionality, but just because they look cool. Or maybe you could somehow combine the crane with a scissor lift or elevator of some kind, into an unnecessarily complicated but nonetheless steamy contraption. A crane on a scissor lift, or something...
