Positive Reactions From Doing Steampunk

I know what people mean about the fancy dress thing. I tend to wear what people would class as steamy attire every day, but its the minute I wear something "functionless" that I feel "dressed up". Like, if its bright, and I NEED my goggles, I'm fine, but if they are just an "accesory" it feels pointless wearing them, like wearing sunglasse at night! I get like that with a lot of things, like my utility belt, goggles, certain hats etc. If I don't NEED to wear them, then I feel like I'm in fancy dress.

On my trip to town yesterday, even though I was "dressing down," ( all brown and tan, six pocket cargo pants, snakeskin boots, leather flight jacket and short leather topper) I received four very favourable comments on the hat, one from Lady Nancy's hair stylist, who inquired if we had seen the recent treatment of "Alice in Wonderland" on SyFy ( as it so happens, we had,) and remarking that my chapeau " looked like Hatter's."  ( Actually, I think it's a bit better, but nevertheless...)

It was doubly pleasing in that this lady did not seem the type to have been watching "Alice" in the first place, so it made me think there may yet be hope.

This years Winter Stroll went smashingly, i must say! Hosted by the Chrononauts and organized by M. G.D. Falksen, 20 odd steampunks convened at the old smithsonian castle. One could hardly have picked a better venue, the victorian building is a red brick castle situated in the middle of the Mall and has a lovely portico and garden in the back.

We posed for a number of pictures indoors also, and were an instant hit with the publick there, setting a precedent for the rest of the day, in fact.




Next we took a stroll across the mall and visited the American History museum and the Natural history museum (naturally).




All told it was a delightful time, i was able to meet up with a few members of this forum and together we fielded a number of questions from the public, as well as a number of security guards and museum volunteers who kept asking if we were part of the exhibit! (Ha!). A jolly- good time was had by all, i think. I highly recommend trying to come out next year, if you are able.

Ok, so I've been outre and eccentric and have dressed thus my whole life, and although responses in Urban environments from females have generally been quite positive, the caliber of doxies who've been romantically interested since I got all Steampunked has increased dramatically.

That qualifies as a positive reaction in my (little black) book.

Ahhhh, the circus lassies, flying across the center ring to land in the big net, the spectacular BOOM! of the big gun....nothing like a good human cannonball act! I, too, have a decided affinity for the large bore ladies...Oh, wait...that's not what you meant by caliber? Ne'ermind....

Whist driving down from Boston to New York on the eve of Yuletide, I chanced to pause at a rest-area (or "pit-stop"), where a charming young woman complimented my bowler.

Unfortunately, later that evening it was eaten by my sister's dog.

I've gotten a few compliments on my outfits from customers at work.  I wear striped shirts with Victorian patterns coupled with a few vests.  I need to make some vests so I can add to that.  I have the designs worked out.  Hmm.   Anyway, it's always nice to get compliments.

You ever drive southwest in the early part of winter? Have you ever noticed how the sun, even at noon, even with the visor down, gets in your eyes?

That's why I'd wanted to go the evening before. But, as always, cruel fate was not with me. We didn't set out till morning.

Came noon, and the aforementioned sun began to really bother me.

Fortunately, I had my nice goggles (100% UV-block, even) with me. I worried about losing peripheral vision, but eventally I gave in to need. And they worked just fine, virtually no interference. Thus was saved the day!

Walking through the City of York on New Years Eve with Mr Peter Harrow and Lady Elsie a fashionable young couple approached me and enquired where I had bought my fine coat. I was forced to admit it was a one-off by my good Lady which sorely disappointed them.  This was just the start of a huge number of very positive comments over the New Years Holiday for all of us in our hotel and in the City on New Years Day.

I must be honest and say we have never had anything but positive responses from people when out as a group and complements are relatively common even when out alone or as a couple.  It seems a confident style does do wonders.

This New Years I was out on the town in the low-key version of my space cow boy get up, side-button shirt, shoulder holsters, and hat with goggles.  There was one previously unknown to me lady, also with a stylish hat, who seemed to dance closer and closer to me every few minutes.  Alas, my party included a very cute, rambunctious lass, famed for her abilities as an unconscious cockblock.  She's not dating any of the boys I was out with, but any time any of them maneuvered anywhere near another woman she was all bouncy and up in the guy's face.  Off goes the girl...  Still, nice to have been told that fancy-hat lady was apparently not the only one to take notice of me that evening.

Well, my brother and sister are having a charity quiz and asked if I could get a couple of teams together (they knowing about my friends in the various 'vampyre' clubs) and I suggested a 'Steampunk' team.
 Of course, thier reactions were 'what the hell is a 'Steampunk'. I told them to google it and make up thier own minds (Yeah, lazy I know).

So, I've now had messages from the members of the other teams (Harley Riders, First Aiders, Council workers, Photographic Society, etc) all saying how we all look wonderful, how interesting they find the concept and how they're all looking forward to the meet-up.

Just hope they're still as positive when we thrash them.

On Saturday, a group of eleven of us went out for a Sherlock's night - the movie, and then to a pub called Sherlock's. As soon as we got there, our waitress asked immediately if she could get a shot of us for the website. They haven't put up the shot yet, but the group has it as our official photo.

One girl stopped me in the bathroom and said that I looked like a stepped out of the Sherlock film. I was like, "Well, that's where I just came from, dear." and she went all wide-eyed. Oh, the joy of tipsy young women.


Upon rereading that, I want to delete it, but can't bring myself to.

so its only been about two weeks since I really decided to start dressing the part but so far the reactions have been far far far better than I could have ever expected.

beyond the slew of "nice hat" or "wicked cane" compliments and occasional questions on where I got my clothing. I caused one of my teachers to run into a door while doing a double take. had a random lady at a party walk up give me a kiss and hand me her number (a first for me. usually there is at least an exchanging of names before the kiss/number combo).

have to say the best one so far was on friday when I was heading to a class party. I stopped by the liqour store for some beer and the cashier complimented me on my hat. we got to talking a little bit about steampunk fashion (she was a fashion design student apparently) she then looked around the store then leaned in and told me not to say anything but that she was giving me a staff discount. 10 dollar hat = 10 dollar savings on beer, seems like a good trade off to me .

I have ventured out aproximately 3 times with other steampunk in recent memory and every time our unusual attire has gained us many compliments and even new friends occasionally

Everyone loves our dress code and lets us know about it wherever we go Although sometimes people do just look at you oddly, but then you just smile and tip your hat at them and they get all shy and flustered

I haven't been out in public in my steampunk attire much, but usually when I do, most people pretend to ignore me. I did however have one girl at a local karaoke bar say that she loved my look and wouldn't mind being seen in public with me anywhere. 

I get more positive comments though from my dieselpunk attire.

oh man I havn't been to sherlock holmes for ages. I was meaning to stop by last time I was in deadmonton but didn't have the time. I hope you went to the downtown location I can hardly think of a better location in the city for a photo shoot.

edit: at least i'm assuming it was in edmonton since I don't think calgary has a sherlock holmes pub.

We actually went to the one in West Edmonton Mall. In the summer, I'd like to head to the one downtown and see what its like. Its a bit of a walk off of my bus route, so I'm not interested in walking in the cold.

You should look us up on Facebook and let us know when you'll be in town again. We can probably throw together a small get-together at Sherlock's. =D

I'm from edmonton originally but I live in vancouver now. and the one downtown puts the west ed one to shame. its all kinds of awesome, you have all these big tall skyscrapers on every side and right in the middle of them a small english cottage on a cobblestone street just tucked in. its like a little part of downtown that time forgot all about. not to mention the foods better and I found the servers much much much more friendly.

theres also an upper level that you can reserve for groups.

in general its just all kinds of awesome
