"Inspired by the recent ’steampunk’ trend, the latest G-Shock model from Casio comes with modern electronic features but a somewhat antique design. The watch features a bronze-colored aluminum case with perforated resin band, electroluminescent backlights", etc blah blah.

If one needed further proof of the growing popularity of steam in the general media & industry, then we need look no further than some of the latest products hitting the marketplace (although in fairness to Casio their own product description does not use the term steampunk, although their interpretation of the design cues on the watch are difficult to miss). markf

It sounds to me like the marketing department trying to cash in on a market.

Which of course reminds me of "Earring Magic Ken"... Smiley  The wikipedia article sums that one up nicely...

Would you say it's a "steampunk" watch though?

I don't like it, but I wouldn't describe it as steampunk in any way.

It looks modern, and apart from the brassy finish I don't see any reason to think it is steamy.

And no, I don't hate you for having different tastes from me.

honestly the biggest problem to me is that the shape/style and the colors don't go well together. if one of those things were changed I think it'd be a much more decent looking watch. as to it having a steampunk resemblance, I just don't see it.

I dunno, the watch made from salvaged pieces of the Titanic's hull we saw a while ago was worse.

And a company called Boker have slavages armour from the wreck of the Tirpitz to use for knives.

Casio, at least have made a watch from scratch without cutting up any shipwrecks.

If it was done in black/chrome stylee it wouldn't look so bad.

The colour scheme doesn't really fit. I had a Casio that had analogue hands for time as well as the time in digital. It's the digital numbers that turn me off it when coupled with the shell design, rather than the actual look of it.

It reminds me of a prop that could have been used in Space 1999 or Buck Rogers, you know, those "futuristic" looking devices that just look highly dated.

Yup... it's not casio who is cashing on the steampunk trend, it's the article writer who wants a piece of the cake.

Tomorrow we will see that every old Benz painted gold/copper is in fact a Steampunk memorabilia...

Bored planet it seems...

As far as watches go, I like the Casio G-shocks.  I've had one for at least 5 or 6 years (look here:)

http://www.hbwatches.com/gw1200ba-1av-casio-gshock-solar-atomic-titanium-coated-watch-p-12.html

and have been very happy.

But I don't see what's "steampunkish" about a watch with an LCD display.  As far as it's appearance goes, if I have a dog as ugly as that watch, I'd shave its ass and teach it to walk backwards.

That's a pretty nice watch, I wouldn't mind wearing one of those.  That first one, on the other hand... blegh!

So...a DIGITAL watch which has been coloured in a brass/copper colour is Steampunk-inspired? Someone needs to hire a new researcher...

It actually kind of looks a bit like something that you would see in Firefly... Specifically how the display is laid out... If it were from firefly there would be more dead pixels and tarnish on the actual watch. Not steampunk anyways...

$99 for the Casio "1980's revival" watch, or approximately $80 for an original, working early-1900s Molnija trench watch off eBay (average price when I was looking for one a few months back)? No contest. Must try harder.

I sure as hell wouldn't wear that bloated piece of junk. But especially not for anything remotely "steampunk"
