If we as a culture wish to truly take off as a sub-culture, we'll need customized emoticons and acronyms.
For example;
A higher-class sophisticate might wish to don his monocle during a chat, like so: -_Q
Whereas BTW means By-The-Way, BTB would stand for By-The-By; wich is far more appropriate for gentlemen and women than the former.
Feel free to add your thoughts and ideas!
-_Q Monocle. (Sir Andrew) BTW By The Way. (Sir Andrew) BTB By The By. (Sir Andrew) WC Water Closet (traditional, mentioned by Rococoboy) ByJ By Jove! (initially Sir Andrew, corrected by Heavyporker) STOP sentence end (traditional, mentioned by TheClockworkWasteland) END post end (traditional, by Kabuki) JOVE By Jove alternative. (Daeudi_454) WAA We are amused. (RPFolkers) HP How peculiar. (RPFolkers) IS I Say! (BigGenNickYard) QS Quite so. (BigGenNickYard) WP Well played. (BigGenNickYard) HH! Here here! (BigGenNickYard) TB Talking b*llocks. (BigGenNickYard) WWW What what what? (BigGenNickYard) GSOC Good show, old chap. (MrFats) WTD What the Dickens? (MrFats) VF Very Flash (TheClockworkWasteland) BTC By the cogs! (TheClockworkWasteland) -O=O- Goggles. (Sir Andrew) THOB Top hole, old bean. (Wilibald) WATT What's all this then? (CinnamonAndSpite) --O- Monoggle (B. Fugu) BRAWN Badly Rendered, And Wanted Not (Replacement for spam (Alderman Simeon) C|:) Bowler Derby (Otto Morgan)

^_Q I've also come up with a replacement for OMG; BJ (By Jove) I say by the bye! ::giggle:: My most steampunk/old-fashioned habit, however, is using as few acronyms as possible, aside from wc (Water Closet). I adore -_Q however.
I couldn't agree more! I simply list these for convenience.

BJ (By Jove)
That's the best! I will be sure to use that in place of OMG in the future! Perhaps we could put periods in our acronyms, when we use them? That's more old-fashioned....

Speaking of appropriate acronyms, do you know that OK is an abbreviation (apparently) of Oll Korrect, an on purpose misspelling, sometime in the 1800's. At least, I think it is. Amusing certainly.

I personally prefer to avoid using such an acronym as 'BJ' on any forum for obvious alternate understanding purposes.

Agreed. I fear that the youth of today- indeed, the greater proportion of modern society- has lost all sense of propriety. And if one were to seek a replacement for the offensive OMG, a preposterous form of taking the Lord's name in vain, then I for one would rather add a letter than reduce by one. And so I will just proclaim- JOVE Now to seek more appropriate forms of other exclamatory statements, most of which are nothing more than a sluggard's profanity.

LOL should be replaced by a more civilized WAA - We Are Amused. Similarly, WTF must be replaced as well. I propose HP - meaning, of course, How Peculiar.

I do believe that a retooling of the overused "ORLY" is required. Stop I propose "IS" which equates to "I say." Stop The old response was "YARLY" Stop The new response should be "QS" or "Quite So." Stop I also propse the following: Stop "WP" equals "Well Played" Stop "HH" equals "Here Here!" Stop "TB" equals "Talking Bollocks!" Stop "WWW" equals "What what what?" Stop Now, I must go, and wind my gears as they are slowing down. Stop

I wonder how much is lost in abbreviating these choice phrases rather than simply typing them out. "By Jove" really isn't that long. Neither is "I say" or "Quite so"
Perhaps we should just type them out?
This is, however, a most excellent discussion and one I've had with my friends on more than one occasion, please keep up the good work!
p_q Goggles perhaps?
