As there are some of us here who can't avoid quoting the Goon Show from time to time... or indeed rather too often, to the dismay of our spouses... can I suggest a specific thread for it...?

Good Morniiiiiiiiing....

For thirty years, Caesar ruled with an iron fist. Then with a wooden foot. And finally, with a piece of string.

Ohhh Ta.

Given the position of this thread we really ought to be coming up with steampunk associations in Goon shows, or at the very least shows with a steampunk flavour.

Any advance on "Wings over Dagenham"?

Basically, if you didn't have the Goon Show, you wouldn't have Monty Python. The Pythons were all inspired by the Goon Show.

A BBC radio show from the fifties/sixties written mainly by Spike Milligan.  Starring Spike, Peter Sellers, and Harry Secombe, (and Michael Bentine in the first series).    Started out as three short sketches with a musical spot between, but soon formed into a whole story.

The three principals play a cast of characters who appear in each story playing other characters(sort of).

The hero is usually Seagoon, often trying to be a hero, or falling victim to a scheme planned by feindish criminals Grytpipe Thynne and Moriarty.  Often aided by idiot Eccles and itinerant boy-scout Bluebottle, wrinkled inventor Henry Crun, military coward Major Denis Bloodnok and a whole bunch of others.

I'm not sure who can get see this, but they still play the show on BBC radio seven, and can be heard on the listen again service.

Remember the film- 'the Curse of the Muckinese Battlehorn'? How about the near Goon flick 'Down among the Z men'?

Minnie Bannister:
Help Henry! I've been struck down from behind, buddy. Heelp!

Henry Crun:
Mnk - oh dear dear! Poor Minnie! Police! English Police! Law Guardians...

Minnie Bannister:
Not too loud, Henry, they'll hear you.

Soooo many great lines...

But Henry Crun's inventions and frailties were wondrous...I distinctly remember a episode where their rickety powered car breaks down 'cause the candle that powers the engine has gone out :-)

Not to mention the idiot logic of 'knowing' the time 'cause "A nice man wrote it down for on a piece of paper"

The real inspiration for Bluebottle was a six-foot tall Scout-leader with a massive red-beard who spoke in a very high voice...

"Ahhh that's done it!"

"Done what?"

"I've invented the aeroplane!"

       *phone rings*

"Hello yes?"

"This is the air ministry is your plane insured and taxed?"
