I chose a Victorian-esque outfit for my foray into the university library today. I figured it would be fitting, since I was delving into R.L.Stevenson

Thanks the looks I got going to see Alice were funny.
Hee hee. Some of us played dress up to go and see Alice too (no photos sadly) including a Cheshire Cat. As we queued we saw an Alice and a Queen of Hearts coming out of the previous showing. They claimed they that too had had a Cheshire Cat, but that he had disappeared! Quite reassuring to know it wasn't only us who were this *ahem* eccentric!

thank you Mr Hogbin! Lord Wraste, strangely enough dour librarian was the look I was going for good to see it worked. I wish I had had someone with me to take a picture when I was balancing on tiptoes on a stool between shelves of Victorian books, pulling stuff from the top shelf...

(*cough cough*)(drat! Forgot to put my dark glasses on, didn't I?) ummm..well, I'll definitely take that as a compliment! Really, though, old man, the idea that a member of a Royal House would run off to the wilds of America to hide, then come here and support the BG website just because he was homesick would be just too fantastical, wot? Here is a photo of Uncle Nick Tsar Nicholas II when he was young... ...and here's a rather grainy photo of myself, taken a while ago with a long lens.... Really, no family resemblance at all....really...(*cough cough*) ....if it's money you want, Captain, contact Willoughby, he'll fix you up, but for Heaven's sake please don't "spill the beans" eh, old chap?~"T"

Stella: That's an utterly fantastic waistcoat! Decided to post the first of what I hope are many, gradually improving, steampunk outfits! Marika: I'm a tad unconvinced by the loose belt. It doesn't look functional (not keeping up trousers, or used for a pouch, etc) or particularly decorative. It's just there. Love the greatcoat though. It is very fine.

So if I'm dead set about having something about the waist what do you think would be appropriate? I tried the outfit without the belt and it feels like it's missing something.

Thanks costumemercenary, it used to be single breasted but then I took up roller derby and it had to be taken in. I think it looks far better like this.

I'd say its still missing something: the belt is good, but needs a reason to be there. I'm not sure what sort of "character" you're going for so I can't recommend a specific prop/accessory, but there begs to be something hanging off that belt, perhaps a largish leather pouch pulling the whole thing down towards one hip? A holster, a heavy compass, bag of magic tricks, whatever floats your boat.

So if I'm dead set about having something about the waist what do you think would be appropriate? I tried the outfit without the belt and it feels like it's missing something. Actually, for me, it was more the looseness of the belt. Loose belts usually mean they're there to carry something (like an accessory, pouch, holster, light sabre, etc) and you don't want it digging into your flesh, or it's a very elaborate/decorative low-slung belt (and you're layering it with a number of other ones). Otherwise, it could be there to belt in a garment to give it shape (which it's not doing, since your top is tight as is) or it's holding up trousers (again, not). I think if you did it up tighter, it'd instantly look more complete and less just dangling there and too big for you. That said, I do agree with Utini420 that an accessory on the belt is the way forwards. I highly recommend a pouch of some sort. I keep my wallet in one and it's really quite handy.

I actually got a compliment from the lady running the Starbucks at the last DragonCon: I actually use all the pockets and pouches I mix in with all my costuming, and apparently after all the Klingons and Wookies she was happy to deal with someone who could actually reach their own wallet!

A pouch of some sort really does sound appealing. A holster's also something worth looking to.
My sense of character-self thus far is kind of loose so I might just have to try a bunch of different things. Thanks for the ideas Utini and costumemercenary.
