I am a new member here, so forgive me if this has been a topic of conversation before. I did have  good poke around and do a search or two before posting.

Thief: the Dark Project, Thief II: the Metal Age, and Thief: Deadly Shadows.

These have to be some of my favorite games ever, and the Steampunk setting is a large part of the reason for that. There was a real emphasis on Role Playing, and there was a lot of exploring that you could do. There is also now a huge fan community, that has actually released an expansion game of their own, and there is another one being worked on.

Alright, so many of you might well have heard of and played this game, but hopefully this little post of mine will introduce many more to a source of joy, via a virtual immersion in a Steampunk world.

I've got Thief Gold edition and Thief 2. Both were good, never finished either of them; though I might have to go back and rectify that. The lastest one out was (the 3rd in the series) Thief: Deadly Shadows Which I wouldn't mind having a go at. It's supposed to be more of an RPG

You gaffer! *whistles*  Wink

I believe you mean 'Taffer'

But shout out to you for having seen it.
Yes, the games were notoriously hard- I am a bit of a Theivery nut (love playing them in any kind of game) and so I went through both of them on the Expert setting. It took me years, literally.

And I loved every minute of it.

Oops that sounds more like it, but it's been like 7-8 years since I've played it.  Embarrassed
Those whistling guards keep you on edge.
And you've gotta love the rope, water and moss arrows  Cool

I bought the original game the day it was released (only game I ever did that with) Loved it.  Had to get walkthroughs to complete it, but good fun none the less.

Oh! Andy.

I envy you, I really do.

But be aware, the game is really hard. There is an entire community out there, still dedicated to the studio's games, but even us freaks still shudder at the thought of the first time we had to do 'The Bonehoard'.

http://ttlg.com/
is the hub of that community, and I predict that you may need it. I bought the game the week it cam out in Australia, and back then I was barely aware of the internet. I played through both first games unaided, and it took me YEARS. Literally. Sure, I didn't cut myself any breaks, insisting on playing on the Expert level the whole way through, but still. Years.

Still, from the moment you enter the first level, and attempt to steal that sceptre from Bafford's Manor the steampunky setting just takes hold of you and doesn't let go.

Enjoy.

I just got Thief 2, and played for about 5 hours the other night. I'm on the third mission, it's quite enjoyable! I played the first one years ago, but couldn't afford the full version.

If you like sneaking game sand steampunk, I'm curious if you've played any of the Tenchu games? I think it was Deadly Shadows that had a Japanese castle with clockwork automatons as the main adversaries.

Tenchu?
Deadly Shadows?

Would that be Thief: Deadly Shadows?

[4 seconds of Googleing later...]

Ah! no, you mean Fatal Shadows.
No, haven't ever played it. Looks kind of good though.
Hmm....

I have just downloaded T2X, from http://www.thief2x.com and can't WAIT to get started.

Yes hahaha... Fatal Shadows.

Yeah I love the controls in that series. It's all about the grappling hook, and stealth kills!

Stephe?  I sincerely thank you for posting a link back to here from TTLG (Faxfane there, by the by).  I've kept this comp on for several full days, which isn't my norm even with XP Pro...I'd rather be conserving the energy....but T2X is fantabulous enough that I've been hosting a .torrent for it.  While that torrent has been uploaded, I've been reading here as lurker until this afternoon.  I have been amazed with many a shaking of head at the experiments and projects, and I've you to thank for that.  The Lord did say 'Where two or more are gathered in My Name, there I am also'; likewise, where two or more are gathered with like interest, there is community.  For the knowledge thereof, you have my thanks and well wishes.  Enjoy T2X; I know I have. *grin*

OMG!!! I can't believe what just happened!!

I was playing Thief: Deadly Shadows, and was at the Inner Cradle of the Shalebridge Cradle (*shivers*)...

The brightness was waaaay too low, so I went to adjust it, and the game crashed.

No big deal, but when I reloaded the game, it said my quicksave was corrupted!! The last time I made an actual real save file was waaaaay back at like the 3rd mission!!!  Sad

Now I have to go all the way back and replay it.. but I'm ready to just give up and play something else now. This is very disappointing  Angry

Ouch and comfs!  Never did Thief 3, but do have Thief 2 on CD (gotta love vid/sound card freebies) and made very sure to get T2X.  I do understand though, albiet not from a SP view: was playing Baldur's Gate (Original Saga + Dudleyville fixes) and was deep in the game (flooding of the mines) when I got a corrupted save file in both auto and quicksave, with the last real save being waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in mission 2.  When I just entered Nashkel.  So that was a fair bit of a bummer.

Of course, nothing sucks quite so much as being almost through Market district in Thief 2 during the first half of Courier and having your auto save corrupted.  That there is just raw angst and pain.

Oh man you must play Thief 3, it's my favorite so far. I'm just bummed that I got to the best level in the game, and the thing is screwed now. I love that it gives you the option to do it 1st or 3rd person! I never play in 1st person now, it's just so much easier to see your surroundings in 3rd.

Shalebridge Cradle makes the Haunted levels in the first two games look like nothing! It's a haunted Orphanage that was converted into an Asylum before it burned down. Nothing quite as creepy as little kid ghosts mixed with mental patient zombies. Though the library still creeps me out in 2.

That library... eugh....

Are you playing on PC?
If so, go to http://www.ttlg.com , and hunt around.

There is a way to alter your...  ?config?... files, that starts you off in any mission you chose. It's as simple as deleting a single character (and believe me, I am no coder) and you are starting from the mission you want.

Personally, never did the T3 thing, either. But that Orphanage? Sounds vile!
Tempting....
