Max Chen’s Creations - Jet Pack and Others

Max Chen (of Oilycog.com) jet pack

Mr Chen, you wrote to point out that someone had made things far better than yours - well, I found quite a lot I liked on your site too!  Above, for example, is a very nicely made (and accessorised) jetpack inspired by both Rocketeer and Steamboy.  I also really adore your Vacuous Squids and also the wonderful ideas that your SF Bicycle Astrolabe generate in my mind.  I mean, an artifact from a bicycle-centric world that shows the cycle routes (and nothing else) of the city, as well as a very cycle specific plea around the edge, hoping to avoid the terrors of cycling - potholes, cars and glass.   Coupled with valve-headed metal squid monsters (that double as candleholders) and I’m terribly impressed!

That, and anyone who posts an image that looks like Totoro is trying to hatch his head is a man with quite a lot of character.  *chuckles*  Thankyou, Mr Chen - I’ll post the link you actually meant to send at some point, I promise!

Wow! The jetpack is especially impressive when you see the picture of it unpainted–masking tape and plywood!!!

What I find funny is that all of his work is inspired and well-constructed. His work takes great efforts. So,why, when a futuristic raygun is needed, he just paints an old-school corded drill silver?

I can’t believe that bike table went for only $200.

To Mr All Trades - indeed, it’s quite inspiring, isn’t it? How humble I feel to know that I have the materials around me to make things such as this, but had not the wherewithall to do so.

actually the beauty of the drill is that I did NOTHING to it. except remove the rather heavy guts. It actually IS an aluminum cast and polished vintage drill. Although I get that point that it needs a little more flair like a fancy barrel. The WETA workshop ones are very inspiring. Thanks everyone for the compliments!

I know I’m a little late with this, but you have a lot of great art on your site. In addition to the steam-punk inspired designs, I love the very industrial art that you do. I hope to see more soon. =)
