When I was a boy there were shoe shops where shoes were not only repaired but actually made. I loved to go there because the wall from the front of the shop to the rear wall was one long workbench with every kind of shoe repairing and making machine. Everything was run by belts off one shaft that ran from the rear of the shop that itself was connected by a belt to a giant electric motor. It was a terrible disappointment if the shoe man did not have to turn on the machine while I was there.
