Updates tonight, and through the weekend

Your friendly site admin here, with an advisory note.

There are several security and performance-related patches that have been tested against the various bits under the bonnet of the BrassGoggles blog and forum, and we’ll be installing these starting tonight, and extending through the weekend.

We’re also taking this opportunity to perform a little maintenance and retooling so that things continue to run efficiently.

At various times over the next several days, you may notice some intermittent down time as various components are taken down for maintenance. We don’t anticipate any particular instance of downtime to be more than about 15 minutes.

I have set up a status page on a separate server; check there for updates if you’re curious. If you have questions about this project, ask them in the comments here: I will do my best to answer them as I have time.

Update 2009-05-07 09:52:06 CT: Intermittent issues with database corruption have prompted a rebuild of the database. A few recent comments on the blog and forum may have been lost, but this damage should be minimal. Database config changes have been made in an attempt to correct this issue; unfortunately, all we can do at this point is watch and hope.

  • Hello there
I was hoping to write a post on the blog.
I saved my draft but I am unable to upload a picture, I always receive" Unable to create directory /var/www/html/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/06. Is its parent directory writable by the server?"
Can Sir proteus be of any help ?

    Cheers !
  • Things have been running fine for me since this last edit.

Other than that, I just wanted to comment on how nice it is that that initial redirect for the root domain is no longer there.
  • I have posted an update with some amount of detail. I still don't know the cause of these things. I had assumed it was one of the patches causing the problem, but it's now looking more and more like the timing is a coincidence.

This is unfortunate, because it makes determining the root cause quite a bit harder.

Similar results using Mozilla Firefox. So, down to the web techs. Thanks guys for all the hard work, remember, it's all rocket science! Thanks for your efforts. Ho humm, go and do some work for a change........
  • Okay - armageddon is obviously here. I am off to make a rather nice cup of tea and see if spare goggles is occupied.
  • Miss Kins
I too have had those same error messages. I'm using Safari, if that makes any difference.

the status page says that the forum is fine, but I'm getting the same message as Darkshines and Angus Fitziron....

I congratulate Sgt. Major Thistlewaite on such extraordinary patience, that I haven't the capacity to possess ;)

Same here...I guess we'll be patient, and wish them luck, and hopefully our little corner of the world will be back up and running soon.

I am trying to access the forum both via bookmarks and via the forum link on the blog page, and getting much the same result as Darkshines, and Angus Fitziron, above. (Approx. 8:30 am CST) My Browser is IE7.
  • Angus Fitziron
I get the same message as the Dr when trying to revert back to home page whilst in the forum (approx 11:35 BST) am now getting the following message from a new log on request:
Table './proteus_wrdp1/smf_messages' is marked as crashed and last (automatic?) repair failed (approx 11:55 BST)
    Browser IE7
  • Dr. Oliver Cross
Conversely, when I try it, I get a statement telling me that I should contact an admin if I "get this error again". Well, as I'm repeatedly getting said error, consider this my attempt to contact.
  • Darkshines
Whenever I try and access the forum, I get a blank page with "Table './proteus_wrdp1/smf_messages' is marked as crashed and last (automatic?) repair failed" written on it :(
