Well, I tried today to go see this fabulous display, but it was not meant to be. As a treat I thought I’d bring along my girlfriend and go walk by the beach afterword, but after 2.5 hours of driving we had only just hit Long Island and she got majorly car sick from the stop and go traffic on the expressway. I had to stop off and wait for her to be travel-able again and by the time she was, it was past opening time and we had another hour and a half left to go. I had to turn around and bring her back to Manhattan; a wasted day… If you’re in the city and you want to go to this, I advise you to to take the train. Of course, it’s over this weekend anyhow. I suppose I’ll have to wait till next year and plan better. On the other hand Donovan sells other art pieces from this local too, so if it’s his art you specifically want to see, I sure he’d be happy to see you.

Mr. Donovan, I was so happy and so proud to see that you selected Sam Van Ollfen to participate in your exhibition. I am going to mention it on my weblog. Sam Van Ollfen is one of my fellow citizens. He has just had a big exhibition of his works in the “Planétarium” of Montpellier, France. He is a very talented young man. I hope your exhibition will be a big success.

The exhibit was wonderful! Art was a gracious host and the artists were great to meet. The pieces in the show were amazing up close and it was such an interactive night! Hopefully next year I might be able to place a piece or 2 in the next show!

Thanks again to Art for putting true artists in the spotlight!

It’s the glass enclosure we want. The Tesla coils make loud cracking sounds and that just wouldn’t work for a study-lamp piece, now would it.

In all seriousness, though; Tesla coils with sparks of any reasonable size are frelling huge.

The point would be to make the art piece look like it was being powered by the ball, as opposed to open electrical discharge, which indicates power draw usually.

In response to Art & Jon D’s comments about plasma balls: You should look into a tesla coil. As i understand them you don’t need a great deal of power to make them work and their construction is surprisingly simple if you are up to the task of miking one of those. A tesla coil would give you the effect you wanted, only it wouldn’t be in a glass enclosure.

Hi, Spring,

The show opens @ 5:oopm on Saturday, ( August 16th.) until 9:oo pm. That’s the best time because it’s the party. But the gallery is also open 7 days a week until August 24, (from 10am until 6pm)

Theoretically, you could make them in any sealed glass container, if I understood this correctly. I don’t have the current means, but I challenge you to make a squirrel cage bulb array with plasma alternate option. You may even want to check into the gasses available. There may be a way to change the gas used to contrast/compliment your color palette.
