Steampunk, the Exhibition of Art and Design

Steampunk Exhibition of Art and Design

Mr Donovan creates some beautifully distinctive Steampunk lamps, which we’ve seen before, laden with brass mesh, naked lightbulbs and curled ornate metals. He is also the very fortunate (and hard working) curator of the upcoming Steampunk Exhibition being held in Bridgehampton, New York next month!

As you can see from the list above, there are some very well loved members of the Steampunk community involved and I think it’d be utterly wonderful to see a whole exhibition devoted to the art and design of some of these very inspiring people.

So, if you can manage to get to Bridgehampton, NY, some time between the 16th and the 24th of August, then perhaps you’ll find yourself surrounded by works of art and engineering in a concentrated bubble of Steampunk. And if you do – please let me know all about it!

Is that the official poster ? I hope the person who did it was volunteer, and not paid, cause, eww bad typos !
  • Ahhh, the Hamptons. If I can get access to a car for that time, I'll go. 97.5 miles isn't all that far. Who's a local for that exhibition?
  • Modhail
Ah, good to see the efforts of "our" steamy artizans getting recognised in an exposition.

Is there any word about a catalogue or somesuch for those of us unlucky enough not to be able to attend?
  • If I do end up going there will be video, photos and other odds and ends from me so any who missed out will get to see .

"The new genre of art and design"
Does that not make anyone else cringe? Ick...
  • Hi, Rich

To answer your question: No. Certainly not the participating artists.
  • Gavin
Why would it make you cringe? That's exactly what it is, at least as far as I can tell. Unless you take issue with the word "new." I could understand that.
  • I got over my "I found this stuff first so everybody back off" bad attitude several months ago, when I decided that the fact that Hot Topic hadn't mass produced a steampunk line meant the style is still new, unique, and self-made enough to engage n00bs without making them feel like posers. If someone wants to claim a retro steam-space-Victorian-Vernian-etc mix of art as a new style, then more power to them. There are no defined lines for this art form yet. I say more plasma ball "powered" art pieces, please.

I'll make it if I can. I hope they allow cameras.

Art, are you the Hampton local?
  • Hi, Jon,

Yes. I live out here in the Hamptons but I was born and raised in NYC.
Hope you can make it over to the show. And, BTW-Great comment, Jon! Thanks. Regards, Art

    I LOVE Plasma Balls.

I was looking for them on Edmund Scientific, but as far as I can see, they only work if you actually touch them, yes? I need ones that displayed the arcs all on their own. ( But I don't think they operate like that.) Does any one know abiut that?
    Best, Art
  • Here is a great resource for understanding Plasma balls.

Theoretically, you could make them in any sealed glass container, if I understood this correctly. I don't have the current means, but I challenge you to make a squirrel cage bulb array with plasma alternate option. You may even want to check into the gasses available. There may be a way to change the gas used to contrast/compliment your color palette.

I'll definitely be there! Can't wait! Art, what do you think the best time to attend will be? I should be out there the opening weekend.
  • art
    Hi, Spring,

The show opens @ 5:oopm on Saturday, ( August 16th.) until 9:oo pm. That's the best time because it's the party. But the gallery is also open 7 days a week until August 24, (from 10am until 6pm)

Looking forward to seeing you there and don't forget to say,'Hello".

    Best Regards, art

It would be really nice if I could go. It's too bad I love in St. Louis now. I miss NY.

In response to Art & Jon D's comments about plasma balls: You should look into a tesla coil. As i understand them you don't need a great deal of power to make them work and their construction is surprisingly simple if you are up to the task of miking one of those. A tesla coil would give you the effect you wanted, only it wouldn't be in a glass enclosure.
  • It's the glass enclosure we want. The Tesla coils make loud cracking sounds and that just wouldn't work for a study-lamp piece, now would it.

In all seriousness, though; Tesla coils with sparks of any reasonable size are frelling huge.

The point would be to make the art piece look like it was being powered by the ball, as opposed to open electrical discharge, which indicates power draw usually.
  • The exhibit was wonderful! Art was a gracious host and the artists were great to meet. The pieces in the show were amazing up close and it was such an interactive night! Hopefully next year I might be able to place a piece or 2 in the next show!

Thanks again to Art for putting true artists in the spotlight!

  • Mr. Donovan, I was so happy and so proud to see that you selected Sam Van Ollfen to participate in your exhibition. I am going to mention it on my weblog. Sam Van Ollfen is one of my fellow citizens. He has just had a big exhibition of his works in the "Planétarium" of Montpellier, France. He is a very talented young man. I hope your exhibition will be a big success.
  • You'll still be open tomorrow I hope.. It was the only day I could work it in...
