Space Captain Smith cover

Space Captain Smith is a recently-published steampunk novel by a Mr Toby Frost about a Captain Isambard Smith in service of the British Space Empire! Bringing steampunk into outer space, Mr Frost throws our Captain Smith in peril and adventure as he seeks to rescue a psychic hippy maiden from a hippy world and bring her to the safety of Her Majesty’s Interstellar Imperium, which is evidently threatened by legions of bloodthirsty ant-men, religious lunatics, and other rum types!

Amidst all this insanty, Smith has only his trusted sidekicks to count upon: a rampaging alien with a literal take on life, and a renegade android with a secret past and a hitman on her tail. “Will our hero get the girl, ” asks Mr Frost at the fine Website which he maintains about his novel, “or will the ghastly Ghast do unspeakable things to him? Only one way to find out – brace yourself for a stirring tale of war, romance, tea and tiffin in Space Captain Smith.”

First of all; might I say that this book/s was probably the best sci-fi comedic-styled steampunk that has ever graced my shalves with its greatness. I loved the British Empire ressurection in it, along with archetypical British male prudence that Smith has in the novel. I would say that this novel (at least in my eyes) is very steampunk. The gothic architecture, the old looking weapons on the covers, the old red-coats and the British Empire itself, to me, seems steam punk in itself.

I would have loved to have seen more mention of the structure of the Empire, but that would maybe look out of place and then again I am far to interested in political system to notice jokes ;)

I hope that Toby Frost writes more and more of these.

(Excuse any misspellings, Welsh is my first language :)

Yep, that was me! I just didn't have time to do the blog any more (although I've done more and I still mean to go back). I took him off to keep the blog and novel seperate, really to keep the concept distinct. Well spotted!

Is this the same chap who had the (now seemingly defunct) 40k blog 'Sons of Empire!' (spacevictorians.blogspot.com)?
I seem to recall there once being a Space Captain Smith miniature on said site, alongside requests to any publishers who may have been reading. Can't seem to find that entry now, though.

Not only tea - it's tea as Spice (60% of the Empire's tea, vital to its operation, is grown on the planet Urn, from which "the tea must flow"), and Fremen ("a legion of tea-obsessed nomads"). I can't wait.

Its on my reading list (when I can get it off my friend), and there will be a sequel "Space Captain Smith and the God-Emperor of Didcot". Which is about tea.

It's a good book, and dear god there is a lot of innuendo, but I'm afraid I don't see much steampunk in it...
