Good afternoon, Just thought that I would add that on my travels aroung Rome, the rather charming natives assured me that the correct way to write 4 is indeed ‘IIII’. Not wanting to be duped by the jolly japesters, I cast mine eyes upon the Flavian Amphitheatre where low and behold carved into the walls between III and V was IIII. I do hope this puts your purist fears to rest. Ta ta.

Prof. Zervo: Well, yes according to Mr Nielsen himself he just photographed the clock.

I always thought that “IIII” was done because the general populace was too stupid to discern the difference between 4 and 6. I am somewhat of a clock collector and many of my roman numeral clocks display “IIII.” I would prefer it if they read “IV” simply because I am a purist, but I live with it. Whatever the case this alarm clock is really a nice piece of work. It even contains my 2 favorite colors: green and gold.

Very nice piece of work. Would like to see it with other colors for the face. Deep red for instance.

Is this really a “mod”? Looks way too detailed and well proportioned to have been “retrofítted”, so to speak. Doesn’t say on that webpage that Mr. Nielsen made it? I certainly like, though.

Quentin: I think the choice to label 4 “IIII” not “IV” was to lend visual balance to the dial, as the numbers on the left hand side have more “digits”. Technically the Roman numeral is “IV”, you’re right. That annoyed me for years until I found this out, now I see why they did it.

Hi ! I alway wonder if the 4 is written correctly ? Shouldn’t it be IV instead of IIII ? Or am I missing something ? I see IIII in so many places (clocks, respectively ) but I still think it’s wrong …

I was looking over this blog before I went to the movies yesterday to see Hell Boy 2. It seemed to me that the movie had a ton of steampunk themed devices and places, even a steampunk dressed character! I advise you to go see it, if just for that
