Steampunk On One’s Commute

By golly, I love seeing steampunk in the everyday, even if it is a country that I don’t live in. This particular photograph, taken by anesterik, is taken in the Arts & Métiers metro station in Paris. The Musée des Arts + Metiers is a deliciously fun museum, full of Victorian machines, laboratories, and amazing industrial creations. (Mentioned before, here.)

What is particularly neo-Victorian, however, is the métro station leading to the museum. Redesigned relatively recently, it was made with the fullest intention to look like the interior of a Verne-esque submersible. I love that it is so evocative, with the brass walls, the portholes and the simplicity of the gears in the ceiling. If only I could walk through this station every day…

  • I just visited today! I dragged my family all the way out JUST to see the museum and metro station. It was wonderful. I got lots of photos.
  • @ Philomena » This is subtly observed, you're right!
  • Thanks for the tip, Comme une image -- I believe this one is on the 11 line, as there's a sign to Chatelet... correct?
  • This (gorgious) station as been designed by a Belgian comic books author (François Schuiten), who required that the station would have no advertissement in.
I'm so sad to learn what Ishan reports...

Well, of course it's the most wonderful metro station in Paris (and perhaps more widely), but be careful, tourists, "Arts et Métiers" has 2 stations for 2 different metro lines, and only one looks like the Nautilus.

I walk through this station from time to time, it's great but some morons tend to scratch the walls writing crap in big letters. It's a shame really, beautiful work of art.
  • ARG! ANOTHER thing I wish I had known about when I was in Paris...
  • Boyling
I went to the museum on foot, but now I wish I went down the Metro to see that! It looks amazing!
  • That's lovely! I'm going to Paris next week, so I hope I'll be able to locate this subway station and photograph it!

I was lucky enough to have this as my 'local' station while in Paris recently, I just about lost it when I first walked down and saw all that!
  • Shorty
I want a high res pic of that for my wallpaper!
  • Captain Amaranth
I cannot help but keep coming back and admiring it all - it's simply marvellous.

From a french fellow, be sure to watch the videos of the Musée on youtube.
(the host is quite annoying, but you get to see some of the marvels exposed there)

Damn it, just when I've just about written off the French - again! They go and do something like this.
