BTW, another good one to see mentioned here would be the "At the Earth's Core" (1976), director Kevin Connor. As a musician I dig the vintage synth sounds. As a steampunk fan I dig the contraption. As a sci-fi buff I dig the story.

You'll hate the "old doctor" charachter, as it is virtually the same charachter as Dr. Cavor - although he looks strangely like General Tarkin from Star Wars.

Instead of summarizing the entire plot of the movie, the best reviewers actually review the movie. Talk about WHY the movie was bad... tell me how you would have done it better... something other than a 5th grade book report.

A lot of people have mentioned that you shouldn't go into a movie like this expecting great special effects. I didn't mean to give the impression in my review that this was what I was after. I usually quite like movies like this, and have quite a fondness for people in suits (even bad ones), stop motion, blue screens, giant foam monsters, etc. I just would have liked to see the monsters be a bit more threatening. Even in large numbers, they present very little threat to our heroes.

I definitely hear what you're all saying about knowing what you're getting into when going to see these films. I only wish this movie hadn't built up so many elements (the elephant gun, the ray gun, the caterpillars, the alien leader, the danger to the modern astronauts, etc) and then never delivered on a single one.

Well, it sounds like Lord Admiral picked the movie up and doled out an ureasonable $25 for it, expecting to see amazing special effects and Victorian sci-fi from Mr. Harryhausen and Mr. Wells, but was sorely disappointed.

I think I could enjoy a film like this. Definitely sounds campy. Am under the correct impression that this film was loosely based on an H. G. Wells novel? I don't know his work that well.

By the way, caterpillars do, in fact, have mandibles. I found a video clip of the creature on YouTube (at about 2:06 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9kmjW73-v4) and I have to say it looks pretty good. Really good. Except... well, while caterpillars do have mandibles, they do not have compound eyes.
