I'm just starting out in the world of watches, I have recently discovered a fascination for clockwork, especially pocket watches and I was wondering if you have any advice on what to buy for a bit of recreational fun. I would like to take apart, fix, clean and place back together the parts of the watch just as a constructive hobby. so if you have any ideas on where to get a good but inexpensive watch to start out on please let me know.

As much as I adore the vintage reality, the simple fact of the matter is that I am but a poor student. As such, I buy my pocketwatches at Wal*Mart. My thinking is, the aesthetic is more important to me than the function.

There is also a third type of case called a 'half hunter', which is basically the same as a hunter case with a small window in the cover. Highly stylish for the discerning mad Victorian scientist.

See here: http://www.specialbranch.net/index.htm

Thanks for a most informative article. I have a hunter which I inherited. It has an Elgin National watch company movement and a Keystone case which has 14K stamped on it in several places and a Warranted 14K U.S. Assay stamp. The bezel is broken so the crystal won't stay put and the movement no longer works but thge watch is in excellent condition otherwise. I think my biggest problem is going to be finding a watchmaker who can fix the movement and a jeweller who can fix the bevel.

Re: Mr Cobol, I've already tried this, it's not as simple as rotating it as that messes with the ability to wind it up etcetera. Thank you for the thought though.

Dion:

I could be wrong, I'm about as far from an expert as you can get, but depending on the watch, it might be possible to simply rotate the dial, not the movement. I'm not sure how much disassembly this would require, though.

I have a pocket watch, sterling silver (Or so the box it came in tells me) that has crown, 12 o'clock position and hinge in line. Is there a way that I can turn the internals so the 3 is set towards the crown without destroying the watch?
