PMOG – The Steampunk Style Passively Multiplayer Online Game

The PMOG, The Passively Multiplayer Online game, has just launched. This is a new type of online game that uses the internet as the game-world. Players can create quests that have you journey from webpage to webpage, avoiding traps, earning badges and discovering treasure that you can use gain new items and bonuses for your “avatar”. What’s even better is that this game has a wonderful steampunk look that adds a whimsical touch to everyday web-browsing. They have truly created what some in the steampunk community call “the Aethernet”. The only things that are missing are airships and internet-kraken.

The PMOG currently only works on Firefox.

all i get when ivisit the page is "it works!" please help.
  • First of all, I regret to inform you that PMOG is back up. My belief is that they pwn'd Nova Initia and for that burdenday banned me on the PMOG the thenethernet. Secondly you have to have the most recent toolbar for tnn to work.

Thirdly, and most importantly, Nova Initia is undergoing closed beta trials. Click on the door to get in. Let me help you and do it the easy way: http://www.nova-initia.com/remog/charter There is about an hour of reading to do. Have fun. Find me on the re:fudge if you have any questions, or on Gmail - see my tnn profile page.
  • PMOG died, from mismanagement, perhaps.

Like the first version of Star Trek, that the networks killed, and made a comeback, or like Netscape which became Firefox, thenethernet has gone opensource.

    It is phoenixing itself here:

(click 'There is still some usefulness here' to request admission to beta testing)

I don't think this is safe. I prefer playing puzzle games or object finding games, just to relax. I'm not so keen on the gaming that consists of you creating an imaginary world, it's something that scares me, I think I'd become out of contact with reality.
  • I never heard about PMOG before.. It looks like a very interesting online games. I haven't tried it, but it looks like that the website is no longer active.
  • haha ? the one who is posting the comments :D

this was replaced by the nethernet but has now been shut down
  • NeoSteam is a really good SteamPunk style RPG game. Worth looking at.
I haven't heard of PMOG before.
  • It seems to work with the Flock browser as well. So far, so good, anyway. I’ll be sure to retract this statement if I discover otherwise.

I just got browser hijacked while using this game, and not in the “XKCD has left a portal” way, but in the “There’s spyware on your computer, let us take it off” way to a page pretending to look like an official Microsoft page. I’ve also been getting a large amount of “Take this survey” messages popping up that I also finally attributed to this game.

    nice blog

It's a fun diversion, but I'm worried at their mode of revenue generation.
  • Cory Doctorow is on the board of this project so you can rest assured that even the biggest privacy nut's concerns will be addressed.

I've been playing the game and its quite fun although there are plenty of bugs in it still. Wish they had better character development w/ more artwork. I'd love to have a uniquely visualized character based on the types of sites I went to.
  • Of course it was right in my face, and i just didnt look hard enough, disregard my last comment!

    this is a blast!
  • It seemed to have Downloaded alright for me, but i dont seem to have the tool bar that the Tutorial is showing me(I am on a Linux Computer, i dont bow to windows, lol) But i am using firefox, my OS is Ubuntu 8.05, and i downloaded the extension, maybe im just missing the obvious...
  • An absolutely wonderful game this is! I'm stashing crates and building portals as we speak. Thanks for bringing this to our attention!

I'd want to see their privacy policy on the tracking data they are collecting before I sign up. Are they going to be selling my surfing patterns to third parties?

Amazing and unique game, by the way! Top notch.
  • The PMOG would appear to be having a rather frightful day, their web based entertainment exercise is currently unavailable.
  • It's quite slow right now. It could just be because it launched and lots of people are trying it, but its a bit frustrating. I'm not a big fan of the toolbar itself. It's quite bland and its hard to make out what each 'mystery meat' icon stands for this early in the game. Using labels would be nice. And this merci could also use a text editor. I've seen a lot of typos, missing text in profile editor, etc. It's a really cool concept, but it's not done yet.
