Joule Thief Steampunk Headset Hook

RJSDIY2M1Zg

The honourable Garagemonkeysan wrote to let me know about this clever functional little gizmo created with a Steampunk style.  Designed with the joule thief circuit (a circuit designed to squeeze the very last dregs from previously abandoned batteries) this brass and glass panel will hold your chat-headset securely (using magnets to attach to another surface) and will light the ‘busy’ indicator when the headset is removed.

It makes more sense with the video, but I like it a great deal and it bodes well for future joule thief projects having practical purposes.  Discard not those dud batteries – make a joule thief like Garagemonkeysan!  *chuckles*  Lovely work, Sir.

I am much more interested in the battery holder personally than in the joule thief etc. How did he do that? Is it just using magnets coated with some thin layer of metal for conductivity? What are the magnets sticking to?
  • Absolutely wonderful! I particularly fond of the magnetic coupling system employed in the battery attachment, as it really gives the sense that the electricity is being sucked out of the cell.

Next you need a wee phonograph to play a gentle ditty for folks placed on hold...

Lovely. Somewhat oddly for a steampunk-design it is far more practical than my decidely non-steampunk "busy" sign which I have to activate manually. And a better use of a battery to boot. Now if only I were talented enough to make this myself... or wealthy enough to employ artists to craft items like this for me.
