A Steampunk Dalek Model, By Mr Holden

Mr Holden's Steampunk Dalek Model

We’ve seen the beautiful Steampunk dalek character design by Mr Promus-Kaa, and now the terrible anachonistic force from an alternative Skaro have independantly developed a third dimension!  Mr Holden’s model of a Steampunk Dalek, created for the upcoming Great Crystal Cyberdrome Exhibition (a retro-futuristic themed robot-exhibition at the Eastercon sci-fi convention in London) is a brilliant and terrifying creation!

Apparently created from the unholy union of a Dalek bubblebath bottle and a second hand brass Stephenson’s Rocket miniature, I am sure he will do very well exhibiting at the big event itself – and if things should go poorly, well, apparently the bubble bath is still inside, so he can perhaps generate a bubble-screen and make a getaway.  Good luck at the event, Mr Holden.

Charlie and the Chocolate factory? (original) That was one of my favorite parts of the movie, too.

When I designed my version of the Steampunk Dalek, I tried to make every part of it have a functional purpose for being there. Rather than just slapping on parts that looked cool, each piston, gear, and smokestack had a purpose.

This is a cool model, but I'm a bit confused as to what all those pipes are for...and is that the steering assembly in front?

Much respect for Alex Holden and his model, and best of luck at the convention! :)

I love it a good job indeed!

Love it! It still suffers from the same flaw of daleks throughout the universe, though...

    It can't go up stairs! :P ;)

    @ Chris Clarke

I sure as heck couldn't! But I am looking forward to seeing yours ;)

Ummmm, I find it amazing and silly that people want to discuss the impracticallities of a science fiction character that has been turned into a sculptural piece.
    It looks good.
the part about some of the comments that I read that i thought were silly was 'happy comment BUT and then its tear the piece apart.'
    Sorry if I offend anyone
perhaps i should relax a bit as some other people should just enjoy the art work

the "piston" at the side? actually a cleverly disguised brake device for those persons crazy enough to get too close to the dalek and intelligent enough to discerne the functon of said brake.
  • Doctor Trakov
    That is incredible!
I wonder if there are instructions.

It's good, but anybody could knock something like that together in a couple of hours with a couple of off the shelf model kits and few spare parts, spray it brass and Bob's your uncle.
  • Yes, that annoys me a little too but the wheels and cylinders are taken directly from a cheap mass-produced model of Stephenson's Rocket and I didn't have time to modify them to add a crank, conrod, crosshead, slide bars, etc. Then what about the valve gear? The whole thing is impossible so why worry about it? ;)

There is one thing slightly bothering my about the model. I hate to pick nits, especially since it is a beautiful model, but the engineer in me just has to. What's the piston on the side for? It can't be a drive piston, as it's connected to the hub, not offset, and it can't be a shock absorber, because the axle is mounted to the main body, same as the piston.

I know, it's just a model. Let it go and go to bed...
