Bostodelphia Interview with Jake Von Slatt

Jake Von Slatt, with Steampunk Guitar and Morse Key

The practical and extraordinary, Jake Von Slatt of the Steampunk Workshop has just managed to escape neo-Victorian Daleks in a steambath, and more life-threateningly, has survived an interview with Bostodelphia Blog! Questioned by Messers Impaler and Cod Peace, Mr Von Slatt explains what his version of Steampunk is, why he likes building things – and why he thinks people get a little too caught up on the history instead of the dream!

“Ah, it’s a common mistake to think we care about what the past was. We’re much more interested in what it should have been and what the future can be….”

A very in depth, and interesting interview, definitely worth a read to see Mr Von Slatt’s version of Steampunk, and how it compares to your own!  Thank you both Mr Von Slatt and CP!  (Mr Von Slatt is seen above with his beautiful brass RSS morse tapper, and Steampunk guitar.)

I found this link looking for "plasmapunk" references. Thanks to the interview with JVS, I realized I'm both a steampunk and a plasmapunk (ionized gas, not the other interpretation).

I'm sometimes blamed for the amateur fusion movement, embodied by the fusion hobbyists on fusor.net and talk-polywell.org. From the JVS interview, I conclude that this movement qualifies, and probably defines, plasmapunk. While Franklin was arguably a plasmapunk (lyden jars and electric arcs), I'd credit Philo T. Farnsworth, Robert Hirsch, and Robert Bussard with being the actual founders of the movement. Not that they would admit it. Farnsworth and Bussard both had notable rebellious streaks, and could qualify as "punks".

I note issue 4 of SteamPunk Magazine contains a Jacobs Ladder article. The Hirsch-Farnsworth fusor fusion reactor I demonstrated yesterday at Balticon is powered by a neon sign transformer obtained by dumpster-diving, and is built with a variety of surplus and yard-sale parts and junk.

Sorry Mr von Slatt - I get a great deal of spam and I try to keep it deleted as soon as it arrives. Akismet is very good (and has protected me from 115,000 spam comments and counting) but some do get through that need to be eradicated by hand.
  • Above link "paralegal" is adult spam - how dare they!
