Steam Powered Iron Man Suit

Steam Powered Iron Man from the recent Iron Man #8

The character Iron Man, from the Marvel Comics universe, has usually been more of a pulp or dieselpunk sort of gentleman – with the upcoming film showing various versions of the powered suit that gives this hero his name – and set usually during the 1960’s to the 1970’s and onwards.  The tale of a playboy scientist who is captured and forced to construct weapons against his will, he creates a phenomenally powerful suit.  However, Mr Hayden recently let me know that issue #8 of Marvel Adventures Iron Man, has the man of the title isolated in a community using only 19th Century technology – and must use that which is available to him to construct a suit capable of defeating his foe!

Thus, the steam powered (and nicely Steampunk) suit you can see above.  With pipes and furnaces, Iron Man won’t be moving anywhere quickly, but it certainly looks solid enough to withstand quite a battle.  Of course, while the upcoming film is set in the wrong era, the first Iron Man suit has a very nice prototype feel to it that I think Steampunk fans will appreciate – especially when lifesized.  (Thank you, Spoonman!)  An excellent find, Mr Hayden.

I agree completely, Mr. Wrayburn. Artistic freedom is one thing, but even someone as technically incompetent as I can see that a contraption like that is a death-trap that will steam-boil you like vegetables in an english kitchen. And believe me, that's not a pretty way to go.
  • Franklin Wrayburn
Mr. Svensson, I was just thinking the exact same thing! And even if he was somehow able to fit in that, wouldn't it get rather hot, what with the burning coals and being inside a metal suit and all?

It looks impressive and all, but that armour-design has one huge problem: if the burner is located inside the torso of the suit like that, then how is poor Mr Stark supposed to fit inside it? I understand that this is a superhero comic and that reality doesn't really apply, but no matter how you look at it, that suit is a rather dumb design. Cool-looking, but dumb. Which is a shame, as I rather fancy the hoses that supplies the suit with water.

Ironman was (and still is) one of my fav comic characters. The Steampunk style Iron Man suit is like a dream come true ...
  • This is even better than the Marvel 1602 version! I drew a Steampunk Iron Man once, but the suit was much too streamlined and ended up not looking anything like Iron Man at all. (That's not to say it wasn't a nice gentleman-adventurer battle suit.) I like my Steampunk She-Hulk much better-she was wearing a corset.

Oh yes, and my Marvel-loving folks and I can't wait to see the movie.
    :-D :-D :-D
  • Man, I love steampunk, but when they try to rationalize things by saying stuff like "Not a single electrical component", they make my engineering mind fight with my fantasy mind.

    It does look cool, though.

I can definately hear in my mind the song "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath as I am viewing this image. This is so incredibly awesome! And the prototype one from the film is great too. These armors look unstoppable, like no matter how hard you hit them, they wouldn't budge an inch.
