[...] But I do recognize Pacman as a classic. It’s amazing how well it holds up. There is great beauty in simplicity and its gameplay is excellent, even if its graphics are not. So while I lack any nostalgia for Pacman, I still like the steampunk sculpture, “Pacgentleman” by Doktor A. According to Brass Goggles he has an art show at Cardboard Spaceship that will be going until Nov. 31.

Yes, I do. I've bought 2 of them on eBay a year ago. One's a helicopter game and one's a car racing game. They have two strips of film next to each other with images on it running at different speeds. You'll have to navigate the running film strips with a vehical that is mechanically connected to a steering control wheel. Even the score counter is mechanical. They are also kind of crap really, having plastic gears and making a lot of noice. Also the design was cheap toy design, definitely not art.

Is anybody here old enough to remember when there were actually games that looked like this? I had a 'Space Race' game in the late 70's that was a scroll of paper (with stars, planets, asteroids and other astronomical objects) and a little plastic spaceship that moved back and forth with a steering wheel.

It does not work. You may find Doktor A's remarks in the comments on the page below. I think he's right in his comment, but making a working device would also take a lot of time, I'm sure. Mechanisms are always a pain in the ass.

Alas, Professor, it doesn't work, but recently someone has cobbled together a ROM that would suit it very well, if it did work.

http://jerronimo.livejournal.com/1345860.html

I believe MAKE:Blog has unofficially thrown down the gauntlet to mame cabinet makers.

I might be missing a finer point, or I'm just too lazy to find out - but does this magnificent contraption actually work, as the crank turning suggests? And would there be a lanterna magica rendition of this action somewhere on the aethernets...?
