War of the Worlds Webcomic

War of the Worlds Webcomic

Over at Neatorama today, they posted about the War of the Worlds webcomic from Dark Horse comics.  An adaption by Ian Edginton and art by D’Istraeli, this looks like a rather faithful adaption of the classic HG Wells tale of invaders from Mars.  With heat rays and human resistance, this is one of the wonderful ancestors of Steampunk.  Enjoy!

    well, this looks a treat.

it's pretty fantastic in dead tree form, and the sequel is good too...

This...is...absolutely...STUNNING! Fantastic layout - a real treat indeed! I'm reminded of three things:

    1) My fascination of "Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of The Worlds" back in the day - disable your pop-up blocker for an audio sample, including the inimitable Richard Burton as the voice-over on this "disco"-version of tWotW: http://www.thewaroftheworlds.com/

    2) A recent visit to one of the world's largest publishers of digital entertainment, whose European HQ is located in Woking, Surrey. As we all know, a stone's throw from Horsell Common, where the Martian Invasion takes place. And incidentally, also the home of H.G. Wells. So when you exit the train from London, you are of course greeted by a large tripod emerging from a hole in the ground, where one of these large cannisters have burrowed in.

    3) Orson Welle's brilliant 1938 radio adaptation of this, that sent shockwaves throughout America - many radio listeners believed this the world's first mocumentary to be a true report on an actual Martian invasion taking place, real time. And sent hordes of people into the streets, fleeing in panic from the onslaught of the heat-wave emitting tripods...

Looks like some of the panels were ripped straight from The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 2.

Hey, I spotted this comic about a year ago on the shelf. It looks like they felt they should spread it online!
  • After reading "The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Vol. 2" the bar was set to high to fully apreciate this. In the other hand just bought "The country of the blind and other stories" by HG Wells and the first one, "The Lord of Dynamos" is a shure treat.

  • Beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Like Prof. Zervo, I was taken back to hours of listening to the twin platters and studying the illustrated booklet of Jeff Waynes musical version. Peace.

I have the comic in cbr format as well as the sequal (that they actually made first) Scarlet Traces. They had apparently planed on making the comic as a SWF enhanced online web comic but then changed their minds. I gues they had another change of heart.
