Submarine Adventure at Brighton Aquarium

Brighton Aquarium's Submarine

Mr Tual wrote to tell me that he recently visited the Aquarium on the South coast of England in Brighton, which apparently is the oldest aquarium in the world!  Opened in 1874, and very much built in the Victorian style of the time, there’s still a goodly amount of Victorian style to be had (a nice image here from an old postcard).  Interestingly, they seem to be caught between playing the Steampunk side up, and playing it down – with the above very Verne-esque submarine found outside and a newly constructed underwater tunnel in wood panels and brass, all very quietly there but not advertised much at all.

Mr Tual explains that there’s a rivetted and patinaed ante-chamber deep within that just oozes Steampunk that leads to the main aquarium, complete with sharks and brass numbering.  Moving downwards you get more detail until finally you enter the tunnel that is done up so convincingly that you fancy that the glass may crack and drown you all, were it not for the thick brass holding it in place.
Alas, flash photography is quite unkind on the place, and Mr Tual was a little too excited to get as many photographs as he perhaps wished later, but it sounds like a very pleasant place to visit – with both history, aquatic education and a little bit of newly added Steampunk flavour to boot!  It’s definitely down on my list of places I might endeavour to visit, thank you, Mr Tual!

I live in Brighton and I went here once with my parents as a child, I really should go again because it's been such a long time.
  • This one on flickr gives a feel for the decor of the whole place, which is very nicely done.

Of the 318 photos answering the "brighton aquarium" call on flickr, that was the only one showing anything relevant...

You know, I always want to walk up to tourists taking photographs and in my best mock-hispanic accent say, "You keep using that flash. I do not think it does what you think it does."

A camera's single flash should be used to fill stark shadows in harsh sun conditions, and even then it only works for a few meters. For dark environments, all it does is make the scene ugly. And of course any reflective surface will glare back at you and overwhelm the shot. This effect has become such a part of popular experience that it is used in film and music videos to indicate a nauseated alcohol/drug-induced atmosphere. That's *not* the sort of effect you usually want.

Stick to timed exposures for just about everything, and learn to brace your elbows against your waist or steady the camera against walls and posts. a monopod or tripod is of course handy if the situation allows.

If you're going to take black and white photos, consider dialing the exposure down a notch too. Most gorgeous 19th century photographs would be considered underexposed by modern color standards. Shortening the exposure a bit also can help compensate for a mildly unsteady hand.

When I was last there with The Brood, the submarine adventure was not there but the interior - as described above - more than hinted at Steampunk.

The areas leading to the ocean pool were actually described as being the interior of the Nautilus and there was even a mock up engine room with working controls. My Steampunk obsessed son is very keen to go again as am I.

I just found video of the opening of the Submarine Adventure! It looks quite invigorating! Who knew the ocean had such strong octopuses, can't have them going around shattering front windows of submersibles can we?

They are definitely going for a Vernian experience with the ride, and I'm quite convinced that at the end, the Capt is Bill Nighy...but I could be wrong ;)

WOW! That Submarine Adventure is a totally Steampunk attraction! The queue area and ride vehicle interior look great! I wish they had bigger pictures though :(

Although it says that it should have opened in March of this year...are they a little late or is it already open?
  • You're very welcome :-D
