The Bradbury Building – Steampunk Palace

A fellow by the name of Richard sends us word of The Bradbury Building, located in Los Angeles. It was apparently featured in many big-time motion pictures, which means there’s lots of photos available. BRmovie.com has a rather nice set full of interior and exterior shots, from both real life and the movies. The building’s not too spectacular from the outside; but once you get to the atrium? Heavens me!!! You can see many (hundreds!) more pictures on Flickr, and learn all manner of interesting facts on Wikipedia.

Gee, between this and “The Edison”, LA is starting to look like quite the Steampunk destination!

It was also the apartment building for Pushing Daisies, which, while not steampunk or Victorian in the slightest, did occasionally fall into beautiful antique sensibilities.

I thought that looked like "Blade Runner" Had no idea I was that close. Have to go check it out. Beautiful picture.

The Bradury is quite beautiful if you can see it in person, located at 3rd and Broadway in downtown LA it was built in 1893, its designer thought it was very futuristic with the huge skylight that lights up the interior. Unfortunatly LA doesnt have very much from the 19th century, the only other worthy area is Olvera st further north which has pretty much all the oldest buildings in the city (a church and an adobe from 1818).
I'm from LA and we have more art deco style builings than art nouveau, but there are places to look for 19th century style. The museum of natural history's original building is quite wonderous, it was built in 1913. In the California hall there is a great map of downtown LA circa 1894 also featuring the Bradbury building.
  • Awesome! I'm definitely going to haunt these places when I hit Cali
  • I got very lucky and was able to shoot some images for a clothing catalog at the Bradbury building.

I must say that it is nearly impossible to do this place justice with photos - what makes it so incredible is the atmosphere. The light and dust and iron and echoes. It's absolutely worth a visit.

The photos from that shoot can be seen ===> here

Also, last night i went to the Edison with miss Lev. Perfection. Stunning. etc.

The most famous use of this interior is from "Blade Runner", I believe.
