Steam Llama – Winamp Skins with a Steampunk Twist

For those of you who are unfamiliar, “Winamp” is a rather popular media player program for PC (though versions for Mac and Linux do exist). One of the features that makes Winamp so favorable is its ability to be “skinned”. This means that you can drastically change the look and user-interface of the program to fit your fancy. There are so many skins available, in fact, that even within the realm of Steampunk, there’s a skin to match your specific taste!

First off, the one shown above. Known as Unison Brainstormed, it embodies the elegantly industrial look that I personally favor. It also has fun little features like the gauges on the equalizer that rotate along with the sliders :)

Eight more after the jump…

Next up is “Fortesque“, which is similar, but with a considerably darker feel to it.

Perhaps you like a bit more magic and mystery in your Steampunk? Try the Myst-inspired, Datamancer-esque “Book of W’namp

If, on the the other hand, you prefer things a bit more subtle, I’d suggest “Bunker“. I think the designer was going for something closer to “dieselpunk”, but you really can’t go wrong with dingy metal and gauges!

The Fishtank” should satisfy those whose tastes run parallel to Capt. Nemo’s <>{

Naturally, you’d like this one if you’re a fan of the anime series “Trigun”.

Timepiece” is by far the most elegant, though possibly not the most user friendly…

If you can get past the corporate logos, there should be enough gleaming metal in “TCM” to satiate any Steampunk fan!

Finally, we have this. It’s still in the works, but the bits that are done are absolutely stunning. Let’s hope Mr. Axlar keeps up the good work!

I should also mention the installing these is a cinch. Simply download the file, and double-click it! Enjoy!

    I've found another Winamp skin to the tastes of Dieselpunk:

    It's industrial and it's rusty. >w<

    My friend loves the heck out of it.

    I used to have this one ages ago! I've been looking for it for a whole - thanks for finding it again.
  • Oh awesome! There used to be some pretty cool Industrial Revolution/Steampunk skins for Sonique back in the day, but that program has gone away. I haven't seen one quite that cool for winamp yet. Oh and those two for Media Player look fabulous as well (LOVE Crimson Skies, such a fun game!)

    @Mr. Adams:

    Crimson skies is a bit late for steampunk, more of a Rocketeer/1920s feel. But it's a lot of fun, and the goofy airplanes and storm-generating zeppelins definitely have a punk-ish feel.

    Ah, well, then you might enjoy these two:

    Steamgoth

    and

    the Steamgoth remix, Dark Future.

    And then there's Nucleo, although it's more retrofuture than steampunk.

    I did one of my own called Victoriana, but frankly it sucked.

    Has anyone found a suitably steampunk windows theme for download someplace? My fellow and I have searched but to no avail.
  • The Infernal Mr Adams
    Is Crimson Skies steampunk? (Ive never played it)...but that Windows Media Player skin site has a cool looking skin theme for it.

    Holy Smokes! How did I miss all these? They're great, and perfect for any steam-themed computer!
  • This one is for Windows Media Player, not Winamp, but it still fits the theme: http://theskinsfactory.com/skinsfactory/?page=v...

    Another skin I've enjoyed in the past is the one from Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow: http://www.skycaptain.com/ (unfortunately, it's a flash site so I can't link to the skin: it's under downloads > winamp skin).

    Like some of the skins given above, it may not qualify as "steampunk", but it is a very nice looking metallic robot.
