Beautiful Engraving, 1500’s to 1800’s.

Double-barreled wheel-lock pistol

Reader Ben was somewhat undecided whether he should submit this or not, but the above weapon (while predating the Victorian era significantly) does display an amazing level of craftmanship. It’s a double-barreled wheel-lock pistol of the 1500’s, and this, along with a 1800’s flintlock pistol pair and an engraved colt revolver, really are beautiful examples of the engravers art. Seems peculiar that such amazing ornamentation has always been added to weapons – from carved bone knife handles, to gold-plated submachine guns. It puts into perspective though, the ornateness of Steampunk props, and how leaving any square inch un-engraved or unadorned could well be seen as a wasted opportunity!

  • I have spent quite some time researching engraved pistols - with the hope, I might shamefully add, of reproducing them and selling them within Second Life, though they are rather hard to properly reproduce - but that is one of the finest I have seen.

One must have some respect for such mass-produced yet iconic weapons as the Webley service revolver, but the charm of individually engraved items is something that the best Engine would be hard pressed to reproduce.
