I’m sure many readers have had problems when dining with Venusian princesses, or had their cocktail parties ruined by the pesky moonmen – well, Weta have considered just those problems and adressed them in this highly informative advertisment for their rayguns!  With rockets in the background and pithhelmets aplenty, it’s a rather amusing, and rather Steampunk, two and two thirds of a minute!  Thanks Mr Walpole!

Mr Schneider, from the New York Times article, photo by James Estrin

I never even knew that positions such as Official Clock Master still existed – but it seems that they do in New York, and the current holder of that position is a man named Mr Marvin Schneider.  The New York Times has a simply amazing article about him, and how he quite cheekily managed to get his hands on some of the most beautiful large clocks around.  He paints a wonderful setting of changing old bulbs behind the frosted glass while the muted city ticks by below – it could be almost any time, a hundred years gone or more.  From when the clock was little more than a refuse pile, to his sparetime efforts to hastily learn horology, to the triumphant success of a working beautiful timepiece grown large.  He even recommends that should you wish to time travel, behind a glass and iron clockface is the place to do it. I recommend reading, or indeed listening to the audio-slideshow to hear the man himself.  I envy his wonderful job, but I do not begrudge him it – he so very deserves it, and the city and its clocks deserves him.  Thank you so very much, James – it is a lovely article.

Spiral Clasp from cre.ations.net

Mr Cylver writes to point out a devilishly cunning (though perhaps a little finiky) closure and locking mechanism for a journal over at cre.ations.net. Made of brass and springs, it holds tightly closed your idea-repository and pen before you unlatch the implement and unlock the spiral – allowing access to the pages within. You’d be best looking at the video on the site (I had to watch it twice or so – much like a magic trick) because I do it an injustice with my words. Looks simple, but pleasantly Steampunk. As it is by the same person selling time fountain kits and illuminated sleeve kits, perhaps they will take to selling these as reasonable kits also. Thank you, Mr Cylver!

The Nautilus custom Steampunk guitar from Thunder Eagle

Above is the second Steampunk custom guitar piece from Thunder Eagle guitars, called The Nautilus.  We have seen the previous one, The Villanizer, before but I think this one is most certainly a worthy successor!  This one is obviously based around the style and story of 20,000 Leagues under the Sea’s most delicious of submariner vehicles, sporting pipes, shell topped knobs, and the wonderful flickering plasma effect porthole at its base.  Once again, this is a guitar that is destined for others hands, but those not fortunate enough to posess it may still enjoy the many pictures and even a video of it in action.  Nicely made, Mr Jeff!

Steam Trek: The Moving Picture!

This is rather amusing indeed! While it has apparently been around the conventions, it was new to me so may still be new to some others – it’s a reimagining of Star Trek, named Steam Trek, as if created by someone much like Georges Méliès in 1902 and deeply Steampunk. Glorious paper spaceships on string, two dimensional enginerooms, puppets, bombs and dastardly men who kidnap headstrong young ladies! Oh what fun. chuckles

The above version was cut slightly for YouTube, but the extended version (as well as a rather nice, if slow, animated cog flash interface) can be found on the creators site. It’s fantastic to see Sooty there too – Izzy Wizzy indeed. Thanks to both the Emperor of the forums and Mr Von Slatt for pointing this out!

Chtulhu Spawn in a Specimen Jar, complete with accompanying documentation

It’s not usual that I’ll post something of the Cthulhu mythos, but this is most impressive and the ‘unwilling inheritor‘ responsible assures me that there will be far more Steampunk items forthcoming.  From the description…

“…a series of large trunks were sent to me from America, containing hundreds of biological samples, specimens and paraphanalia. The samples were of creatures I had never heard of, and after a little research, found that they had more in common with the esoteric ideas forwarded in the works of HP Lovercraft, August Derleth and the like. The “Cthulhu Mythos” tales of ancient wicked gods whose rule has tarnished the earth with many tentacular horrors, one of which dwells within this lot. I’d keep them, but their mere presence has conjoured many a horrifying dream, and so I must let them go.”

A leather bound case, containing the bottled unspeakable creature itself, as well as illustrative pieces, a map, accompaning documentation and a glass and brass cased piece of volcanic rock from R’lyeh itself.  Such care, and the owner is now doubt keen to get rid of the unholy item, as it appears to be up on that terribly modern equivalent of the dank and dingey antiques shop of terrible things – ebay.co.uk.  This is only the most recent of his creations, there were others before it. Also, some very grisly representations of the tales of Alice in her wonderland can also be seen on the owners site – gruesome and dark indeed!

The Original Model 420 Pneumatiform Infumationizer from Eccentric Genius - A Steampunk vaporizor

Mr Kaden, of the Eccentric Genius site, has created another peculiar but beautifully Steampunk item – the Original Model 420 Pneumatiform Infumationizer! In his own words:

“A manually powered piston air pumping contrivance enhancing the medicinal effects and sensorial appreciation of exotic oriental tobaccos and herbs.”

As either a tool, or even a functional ornament, it is a beautiful item – and it amuses me greatly that it has what appears to be a porcelein handle on the pump, just to contrast nicely with all the brass, bronze, copper, steel, rubber, leather and glass.  Very nice – seen above unpolished as yet, and still fresh from the workbench!  Thank you, Mr Kaden! Mr Kaden was also mentioned on BoingBoing today – asking for advice on what saleable items he should construct in the future.  So if you’ve had a deep seated desire to have an eccentric inventor construct a functional Steampunk item, then now would be a prime moment to step forth!
